The snap ring surprise

After more than 6 kmiles of track use, my 2nd gear began to scratch a bit on downshift. So I took the transmission out of the car and gave it to my mechanics to open it.

The bad surprise is that the snap ring had failed and I did not know it (no special noise or strange shifting). My transmission was is the snap ring range.

Most of the bearings have some play now. Is it a consequence of the broken snap ring ?

The good surprise is that nothing else broke or has been damaged. 1st and 5th synchros are like new. 4th, 3rd a 2nd synchros have a little wear (the most used on track). The sleeve set hub of gears 3-4 has some wear. The 3rd gear has some wear too (the teeth connecting to the sleeve).

So I will do :

- 2nd, 3rd and 4th synchros & springs
- snap ring
- all the bearings (mainshaft, countershaft, differential)
- oil seals
- sleeve set hub 3-4 (available in Japan)
- 3rd gear, if I can find it (23441-PR8-A02). I can only find the JDM short one on ebay.

Well you need new housing too. Sounds like the ring didn't shatter and haven't been chewed up.

I have an additional one that I bought by mistake if you need it.I hope it helps!Salut,Andre

No problem. I ordered the housing and the sleeve set hub 3-4 from Anayama. The USDM/EUDM 3rd gear is still available at Honda/Acura but it needs 2 weeks to come from Japan. Anayama only has the JDM 3rd gear. The other parts (bearings and synchros) were available from oemacuraparts. I already have the Giken LSD with the 4.4 final.

"Memory" game of the day. The gearbox is in. I just had suicidal thoughts when I saw I forgot the clutch release fork and already put back some (a lot...) of bolts :biggrin::biggrin:

Work completed. I tried to do all the shifts from 1 to 5 and back while suspended on the lift and everything seems fine. I hope everything will be ok on the first trackday. I also took the time to change a ball joint boot. What a mess to get the ball joint out of the suspension arm. It was a thread massacre.
