    Talking I finally did it....

Well, after 10 years of longing an lusting after the NSX, I finally bought one. It's a clean 1991 Blk/Blk automatic with 47K. I was surprised with the automatic. I didn't think I would care for it - and I would have chosen a 5-spd not having ever driven an automatic, but I like it very much. Shifts nice and firm and it's very smooth. I must say, the car's everything I've ever hoped for. It has a few things that need attention, such as the radio cuts out from time to time and it's due for a timing belt, but I'm just thrilled.

I was wondering...Is there a registry of NSX owners? I've been to a number of the web sites and I haven't seen a comprehensive list of owners. It sure would be nice to know who else in the Philadelphia area (I'm in Lower Bucks county) owns an NSX.

I'm a Vette guy too (I own a 74 big block coupe), but there's a lot more Vette owners and events than there are for the NSX.

    Jimbo

    Jimbo,
Congratulations! You have just joined the ranks to which very few worldwide can say they belong... you're and NSX owner.

I too recently made the plunge back in March and I love mine. If you love your 91 automatic, just don't drive the 2000 6-speed, you will drool for one of them. Glad you like yours. Blk/Blk is a great color for 91. Looks like you are driving the Batmobile.

Enjoy and drive safe. Also check out the FAQ section for other great repairs awaiting you as an owner of a high mileage 91. Don't wait till it breaks before you fix it... it only costs more.

    Thanks Gordon,

Yes, I think the only car I'd like more is a newer NSX. I was really surprised when I saw the production numbers. I knew that back in 91-92 that Honda was only bringing over or selling 2000-3000 units each year. I had no idea that the recent numbers were only a few hundred. The newer models are quite rare indeed.

I plan to do the necessary preventive maintenance. The timing belt/water pump is first on the list. On a car like this it doesn't pay or make sense to skimp and try to save a bit of money.

Jimbo, you wouldn't believe how rare indeed. If the info I have been given by Honda US and Acura, my combo of 2000 NSX-T 6 Speed Yellow/Black will only have 10 examples of it in the US this year. Most of the US allocation is Red, about 70% I am told. With only 285 cars being planned, or somewhere in there, that means there is likely about 200 Red ones and an dozen or so each in the other colors with the others being about 30 US coupes.

The new NSXs are rare indeed, but I have driven 1991, 1993, 1995, 1996 and my new 2000 and the differences, while quite pronounced if you know what you are looking for, never the less offer about 90%-95% the same experience overall that we have all come to know and love as an NSX. Enjoy the 1991 and let us know how you like it after the first major rainstorm.

Congrats Jimbo...now let's see how fanatical you become about it over the next few weeks. Believe me when I say owning an NSX has started to change me. I'm not normally a "social" type, but after only a month or two of owning one I'm organizing a drive between Marina del Rey and Santa Barbara, considering joining the NSXCA, and looking forward to meeting every NSX owner I pass on the street.

"Most of the US allocation is Red, about 70% I am told."

Woah...damn...didn't think they'd allocate THAT much for my primo choice of color. Just shows you where the demand is.

Great choice on getting black though. For a long time, it was my first choice. If the dealership had had a 2000 black/black model when I bought my red, I probably would have bought it instead. As I had a hard time deciding between red or black, I simply let "fate" decide which color I should by.

"With only 285 cars being planned,"

That number is similar to what I heard.

"that means there is likely about 200 Red ones"

I have to add that its been quite amazing driving my car down the street and realizing just how "rare" it is. I rarely cross paths with other NSXs, and when I do it is rarely with red (Flying Low's '94 duotone red/black being the only exception). In the past two months, I've seen two silvers, two blacks, one blue, one white.

Once again, Jimbo, congrats on your wise purchase. And be prepared to educate the masses...you'd be surprised how many people don't know what the NSX is!

You could join the NSX Club of America. See http://www.nsxca.org for more information. A month or two ago there was a River Run event held in central Jersey, not too far from you. Or, you could organize an NSX Club event in your own area, and send out a notice to all the local club members! There are currently 18 club members in eastern Pennsylvania and another 8 in southern New Jersey.

I'm a Vette guy too (I own a 74 big block coupe), but there's a lot more Vette owners and events than there are for the NSX.

Not surprising. There are fewer than 8,000 NSX's on the road, and over a million Corvettes have been sold.

Most of the US allocation is Red, about 70% I am told.

That may be true for this year. Since the NSX was introduced in 1990 as a 1991 model year car, roughly 40 percent of the cars have been red, 35 percent black, and the rest distributed among all the various other colors that have been available during that period.

    Cool

Welcome Jimbo. I don't think 47K is high mileage. Not for Honda. Still, the timing belt is important because of its age.

Check out RM Racing's catalogue, they have a lot of cool stuff for the NSX. They have a website www.rmnsx.com

By the way I've owned two Vetts. A 96 Collector's Edition and a 2000 millenium Yellow six speed. Great bloody cars for the money.

It looks like I'll join the NSXCA. I'm also thinking of popping up to Bedford Hills NY (just north of NYC) this weekend. They're having a BBQ and get together on Sunday. Sounds like a good excuse for a long ride.

Regarding the mileage, I didn't think 47K was a lot of miles either. Over the past 8 or so years, I've must have looked at a dozen or so NSXs. All were pretty nice, but many of the "affordable" ones had 70K-100K miles. They were well maintained and I'm sure they could have easily went double that, but I just couldn't bring myself to spend $35K on a used car with that many miles.

Here's the things I'm planning to have worked on first...Any additions or suggestions?

    Timing Belt Replacement
Water Pump Replacement (timing belt cover issue)
    Air cleaner replacement
    Fuel Filter replacement
    Oil change and filter
    New alternator belt
    Replace radiator coolant and flush
    Spark plugs replace
    ATF replace/service
    Brake fluid flush/replace
    Anti-lock brake high-pressure hose replace
    General 60K and 90K service
    Rear trunk gas springs replace

Do you still own the 2K Vette? I was considering one of these...but had to go with my first love, the NSX. I was curious to hear your thoughts/comparisons between the new C5 and the NSX.

    Jimbo,

Congrats on your car. I've had mine a little over a year now and have loved ever minute.

I'm not too far from you (I'm 4 miles from Washington Crossing State Park), maybe we can get together some time for a drive along the river.

Yes, one. Dali Racing's "window thingies" to prevent the regulators from failing. An inexpensive fix that can prevent an expensive (and likely) repair.

    Congrats Jim,

I just bought my dream car too. I have been enjoying my 91 NSX Black/black for a couple of months now. Mine has 62K and needs the timing belt/water pump because of age too (thats what I'm saving for). Seems like a lot of money for the timing chain/water pump but it must be mostly labor.

Guess I need to start saving for some better wheels and tires too. window thingies too. List gets long if I think about it too much...

It is intersting to see what other cars people own too.

congrats on the car...better start getting used to having strangers asking a whole lot of questions.."is that a ferrari??" might be one of them ..u simply cannot compare this care to a vette or viper...maybe not as much low end torq or even hp but the build and handling of the car is untouched..i have a freind who has a 355 spyder and even he states that the nsx gearbox is better.wow!!!

Yes, I'm already getting those "questions". A lot of people don't even know that Acura is Honda, so the discussion usually has to start at ground zero.

That's OK. I don't mind questions. Just as long they don't sit on or lean against the car.

    Jimbo,
Having long discussions in order to educate the masses just comes with the territory. I have gotten used to that. The thing I haven't gotten used to though is people with malace. It seems that the favorite thing for people to do is to park as close to the car as possible. One guy even parked 2" away from the car on purpose and had the nerve to tell me he was "teaching me a lesson" for taking up two spaces, but where I was parking, the spaces are too narrow to get out because the doors are so wide if I don't take up two spaces. Almost coming to blows in the parking lot was enough to get this jerk to move his car, but not until I moved mine too... to 2 spaces on the other side of the building.

As much fun as the car is, I don't mind people who love the car and know what it is and always wanted one. Hell, I even gave one guy a ride today that jumped out in front of me in the parking lot and said "love your car man!" I don't even mind the occasional comment for the AARP bunch of "Is that the new Corvette"... or from the Little League teams, "Is that a Diablo?" Nope, but I wish, then I could sell it and buy 4 new NSXs. I don't even mind when that killer blonde in the mini skirt offers an approving gaze. But what I can't figure out is why it is such a magnet for jerks too.

So far, I have been parked in a single space 20 spaces from nowhere and some jerk in a pickup will park 6" away from me in the next space. What is up with that. All that room and everyone has to be a jerk. There has already been talk of others in the building taking odds on who will be the first to key my car.

It is a shame that some people have to be that way, but the NSX seems to bring the best and the worst out in people. At least the cops are friendly... they haven't stopped escorting me to and from the office in 3 months.

Any of you victims of something like this?

I know just what you are talking about...sometime when i visit the local mall...i would put out in the middle of no where just so i don't get door dents...and i would say 7 out of 10 times..i would get some car park next to me so close that i can't even get my door open all the way....

As for the keying part...well that's simple..ppl are jealous in this world they feel the need to damage other ppls property in order to "make it even"...well it is a crazy world we live in

G-Man, I feel your pain about parking, though not necessarily for jerks. Where I work, I have no choice but to park in a public parking lot. I'm sure I'm like most NSXers in wanting to leave a significant bubble around my car, and there are six or so ideal spots in the structure that neighbor a generous parking space on one side and a zone with no-parking stripes on the other. Now, the problem is that during busy hours, people will park on these striped zones even at the risk of getting a parking ticket.

My coworkers and I have made it a habit to cross the line on each side of these zones to deter people from going into them, but this has only worsened the situation. Like you, G-Man, I came out of my office in a fury when I saw someone's car parked within two inches of my car. When I went to move my car, I discovered that a SUV was infringing upon my space from the other side! ACK! Frustration city! Fortunately, I did see a parking ticket on the car's window later in the afternoon.

I just hate feeling so paranoid about the well-being of my car. My coworkers think I've worn a groove in the carpet because I check on my car so often.

You guys said it right. It happens to me too. It seems like everytime I park my car at a parking lot, there's always a car that manages to park right next to me even if i park my car far away enough that there are plenty of spaces to park.

As for the ignorance of the people on the road, I had my first taste today that just got to my nerves. Anyhow, I had pulled into the parking lot to my bank. There were two girls(probably 18 or so) coming out of the bank as I was pulling in. I stopped and let them cross in front of me. One particular girl looks at my car and then turns to talk with her friend. As I drive by, I hear "...corvette wannabe.." (As I park, I see her driving away on a beat up Ford escort wagon) Ooh, that just got me real good. I felt like getting out and giving her a piece of my mind and "educating" her on how common and affordable the corvette is compared to the NSX. Anyhow, I guess you can never under-estimate the ignornance of some people. Oh wel. Just thought that I'd share this with you guys....

If you enjoy driving your NSX-T, don't drive a fixed-roof coupe. These cars embody the improvements (particularly the 6 spd.) made in 97 with the chassis rigidity of the earlier models. Having owned both, I can attest to great differences in handling.

    Joel,
Your comment is well taken. Elsewhere in this forum (I think in the convertible topic)you will find a message by me that attests to the fact that part of me wishes I had bought a Zanardi Edition. Especially now that I have logged some track time. I am better able to appreciate what I can only imagine are the differences. NSX-T is nice and for the "Rolling down the Avenue" mode, it is hard to beat, but when you are tossing the car around during open track sessions with the likes of a Ferrari 333SP, then you gotta bring more than that to the table.

FOR SALE: 2000 NSX-T Yellow/Black. Will trade for 2000 Zanardi Edition.

    Cool

All the talk about door dings! It could be worse, I went to get my car, a beautiful blk/blk 93 with 7000 miles on it from a supposed secured garage to find it gone!!
Now that is a really shitty feeling!
Thank God for insurance, I ended up getting a 95 t after that. But it was a miserable experience!!

    Angry

Okay, Paul M takes the cake but the rest of the world still manages to piss me off with their inconsiderate parking. I think we as a group take great pride in our cars and it pains us to see out baby get dinged. Unfortunately this is one of the costs of ownership that I did *NOT* plan on. Timing belt, okay, clutch, okay, getting keyed, friggen' piss me off!

I have to say though that a car cover has saved my paint more than once, though most people think that I am nuts. Best thing I can offer is that we are fortunate to own such a rare and beautiful car, and we have to try to enjoy it dispite the ignorant people in the world.
