During a smog test at a local smog station here in Norther CA., the mechanic FAILED my 1993 NSX for timing noted at 22 deg advanced (spec. 15 deg +/-2). I ended up drilling the rivets off the timing adjuster cover to change the timing but noticed that when I tested the timing, it was exactly 15 deg advanced. I went back to the smog station and they still would not honor me a PASS.
I called Don at Hill Top Auto Services who is a certified specialist for the Acura NSX and he tested the timing also.

1) He found that using some digital timing lights that it does not get a correct reading (his showed 36 deg advanced) so there are certain types of timing lights that won't work with the NSX.
BE AWARE before you take apart your baby.
2) I used a Sears Advanced Timing light which worked fine with the NSX and Don used a similar timing light to verify my timing

Don then wrote me a nice invoice (FREE OF CHARGE) with the tested results to show my smog mechanic who finally PASSED my NSX after he switched to a standard timing light and it tested 15deg advanced.

Special NOTE and Thanks to Don: Don helped with all this work and did it for FREE! I think Don is an example for incredible service and I can always count on him to help with his special knowledge on the NSX. My NSX will not be touched and serviced by anyone else but Don at Hill Top Auto Service in Daly City, CA. Thanks again Don!!!!
