Lowering Seats?

Hi Gang,
As a current Porsche owner, I've always admired the NSX. So, as my lease comes to a close, I want to try to find a nice one. However, I think that there isn't enough headroom. Is there a way to lower the seat? I don't like the "laid back" driving style that it seems to need.

If not, has anyone had any luck with "modifying" the brackets, or adapting the seats to get about another inch or so of headroom? It seems that almost anyone who wore a helmet in one of these cars would be banging their heads on the roofliner!

I know a few guys that just remove the Seat Cushion when they Track the car because there Helmet does hit the Roof Liner.

At first, I removed the lower seat liner, it is fairly easy to do, and replaced it with a cushion when I fhit the track. I wanted even more headroom, so I replaced the seats with Recaro SPG and sliding seat rails.

I would say the NSX has about middle of the pack headroom, though, the modern Porsches are much better in this regard.

I guess I like the stock seats enough to keep them. I wonder if I could just have an upholstery shop take some of the padding out of the seat to give me some extra room? I also think that the targas have a little more headroom than the coupes for some reason.

Leather or fabric. If it's for everyday, go for the leather because the fabric is a bit tacky. If you just use velcro to swap for events, the fabric might give better "traction". Or get both.

I'm 6' tall, and don't have any headroom problems unless I'm wearing a helmet. When I've got a helmet on, I could use an extra inch.

The stock NSX seats are already actually sitting on the floor, and there's only a few inches between the cushion and the floor. Therefore, even an aftermarket sport seat will probably not lower the seating position, due to the size of sliders and brackets. I actually had my heart set on some seats, and then on further investigation decided they wouldn't lower the seating position (and in fact might raise it), so I had to abandon that idea. (A race bucket like Chris's is another matter, but my car is primarily for street use so I didn't want to go that agressive).

My next course of action will be to visit local upholstery shops and get quotes on some new seat covers with some modifications to the cushions (making them softer and/or thinner).

Did I mention that my above link was to replacement cushions that give you an extra inch or more? A bit pricey but probably no worse than custom and saves you a trip to the upholstery shops.

Heh. Well, my reason for going to the upholstery shop is also because I've got leather cracking issues and stuff, and want to multi-color them, and whatnot.

I've use the dali cushions at the track and I like them. Before that, I had been using the blue cushions suggested in the faq (I think they’re from racer wholesale). The dali cushions are quite a bit more comfortable and look 100 times better. Pulling out the OEM seat cushion is a really neat trick at the track as it not only adds about 2” of headroom but it sets your body in the OEM seats deeper so the seat holds your body quite a bit better.

NSXers at NSXPO confirmed that this was the lowest seating option they have sat in.

I know that a real race bucket will lower the position, because it's got less butt-padding, and side-mounting brackets so the sliders don't take up much (if any) vertical space. But I want matching seats (driver and passenger that is), and don't want to subject passengers to the labor of getting in and out of those (street passengers, that is).

The Dali seat cushions work well as many have suggested. In addition you should consider if you want a "T" or a coupe. The coupe has more headroom.

I removed my seat cushion as instructed in the FAQ, very easy to do. It replaces without any velcro, etc. and no one knows that it is removable. I agree completely about the added side support comes in very handy. And I disagree about the coupe having more headroom. I am 6'3", and I fit better in my T than I did in any of the coupes I test drove. JMHO

I am 6'5" and need all the room I can get but like most don't want to go to a full race seat to gain another inch, beyond the Dali seat cushion mod.

Has anyone seen the Roadster seats by Sparco, they look like a nice mixture of both?

The Roadsters are ok seats. They are reasonably priced, fit between the TAITEC seat rails, and look nice in the car. They don't have a hole for 5/6th point belts, and do not have as much bolster support as a seat like the SPG. I haven't fit the in person, however, I have 3 customers with that setup and the TAITEC rails. E-mail me at [email protected] if you want me to confirm.
