I've seen it done. On the ones I've seen, they just removed the garnish piece (it's just held on by a bunch of phillips head screws), painted the screen whatever color they wanted (if any), then hand molded it to the back of the garnish piece with plenty of overlap wrapped around the edges. I'm told this takes a while because you need to get it to fit the curves tightly. Then they just glue/silicone it in place using lots of glue. It doesn't look pretty but that side is underneath and never shows.
