What Head Units Fit into the Stock?

Does anyone know what kind of aftermarket head units fit into the stock stereo position? i want to put a dvd player with in dash screen, but will it fit? Anyone know a good model that will fit correctly ? If anyone has a pic of something they did that worked out well, can you send me an email of it? [email protected]

There are many possibilities for what will fit in the available space behind te fascia but only the OEM head will work as "form & fit" without major rework of the console.
If you take some time to browse through this forum you will find many examples of what people have done. There is no ready made off-the-shelf plug n play solution.

Like Ken Said, nothing will fit "plug and play" into the NSX console piece... There are bascially 2 options for installing a new aftermarket head unit or screen, modify your existing console (not usually reccomended), or buy a aftermarket center console piece that you can modify to fit your exact application.

We offer a few different styles of the NSX console replacements see them here: http://www.scienceofspeed.com/produc...enter_console/

And if you need anymore info feel free to give us a call or shoot over an email...Also Ken (D'Ecosse) is the resident Audio/video Guru here on Prime, I am sure he would glady give you any info or advice needed!

.... & in the spirit of our mutual appreciation society, Seth perhaps could have mentioned the option for a seperate display for a component system, (much cleaner IMO) as opposed to an integrated screen within the head unit. This can give you a wider choice of options for DVD heads without built-in.
I personally think the viewing angle is much better with this option & relatively free from glare as reported with an in-console screen.

SOS has the OEM Honda Navigation display Pod with or without screen available - http://www.scienceofspeed.com/produc...em/default.asp

Integrate it with Navigation &/or DVD as well as rear view camera.

Because I'm a cheap bastard and I didn't want to blow a huge wad this project, which by the way, my wife has no idea I'm doing this. I went and bought a used alpine cva-1003. I checked the stores, it cost approximately 1400-1600 new. And I got the alpine dva (dvd player), 700-800 new, and alpine 12 disc cd changer 280-330 new. I got all of these for $450 + shipping USED, but in good condition.

Pretty good deal ? I think so.

I'm gonna use a dremmel and carefully cut the console so (hopefully) it fits perfectly. I'll post pics after I've done it. By the way, can anyone pm me on an easy way to post pics? I tried to learn on the faq but I didn't understand how to do it.

Sounds like dva 7996 at that price
The CVA-1003 gets lousy reviews for reliability http://ecoustics.audioreview.com/psc...4_1813crx.aspx

So - are you planning to mount the 7996 & the CVA-1003 in the console, using the 7996 as the disc drive & pre-amp with the CVA as the power amp & monitor?

The first problem you may find in modifying the console is that it is covered with a metal foil - you would be better to remove that from the area from approx mid ash-tray all the way up (the sides at the ash-tray are really narrow, so it is relatively easy to feather the foil to get a good transition from foil to none) You can actually peel it reasonably easily once you get a start. You can also sand it - a lot more work!
Then, I might suggest you re-fill the section you cut out from the old head aperture with bondo - this will give you a completely blank canvas as it were to work with. The bondo also machines very nicely when you want to cut or sand to shape it. If you are using a dremel, then as a minimum I would use an edge guide with a strip of wood clamped to the console to ensure you get a really straight cut. If you have access to a router however that will give you even better capability - make a pattern from mdf first then use a pattern bit to rout the hole in the console (bondo medium). You can finish the edge with a round-over bit to get a nice profile too. That's a good reason to use the bondo medium - you have a thicker substrate that will give you a better edge look. If it doesn't turn out great initially, that's the beauty of Bondo - just refill the hole & cut it again!
