never let anyone borrow your car

I let my coworker take my car out for a test spin. He came back and gave me the keys and had high praises for the car. The kicker here is when I went out to move the car, I see a hairline scratch underneath the keyhole. I cant blame him but just another reminder of me not letting anyone drive my car. I think I can buff it out though....

    thanks for letting me rant.

Re: never let anyone borrow your car

I think it must be a law of nature or something that when you loan a valued possession it will never come back in the same condition. I think much of the time it's because one is looking for changed things on the return.

Still, I would loan my car to a select certain few if they asked. But no one has ever asked to even drive my car, much less borrow it. I know the day will come when my wife will take it without me but that hasn't happened yet.

^^ Not that she isn't welcome to take it any time because she is and I'm not worried not worried at all not even a little bit honest!

Well, definitely consider yourself lucky...unlike that one NSX owner that let someone borrow his car and he got a phone call a few minutes later about it being totaled...

More like don't let someone borrow something that is worth more to you than your relationship with them. Also, don't return anything borrowed from a friend in less than the condition you borrowed it unless you value the friendship less than the cost of making it right.

I would learn a lesson about your coworker from that.

Sounds like you need a car alarm with a remote opener.

Didnt think it would be so hard for anyone to put the key into the key slot. In any case, I do have the remote opener. Just ran out of batteries.

I feel your pain, I have my H1 up for sale right now. about 3 weeks ago I let a friend drive it. he came back half an hour later, " I think its overheating" . I asked where he went, "oh, I took it on the interstate to see what it would do"......Its an 11000 lb truck, it doesnt do anything on the interstate!! Ends up he was flooring it for a few miles trying to get it up to 100mph! Blown head gasket, and the kicker, he takes no responsibility, said I should have told him he shouldnt do that?? Lesson learned

Simple, all these guys are punks. Get even with them. They're nothing to you guys anymore anyways so you might as well. I would. If you can't afford to pay for it if it gets damaged, then you don't deserve to drive it.

Re: never let anyone borrow your car

Let's see, where do I start here?

My best friend had his fully modded NSX totalled 1/4 of a mile down the street lending it out to his cousin. I lost a new clutch in a single day long ago lending a VR4 out. Tail light and trunk damage lending a miata out to Paris Model. Other friend lost their SUV when their significant other took it without permission. Viper totalled years back as I understand it when my g/f's mother took her husband's friend's out for a spin down the street and back. Should I go to the track tales?

Yes, yes.. free car rental thread.. all I can say is that everyone I run into seems to have definitely learned this one the hard way. You likely wouldn't lend your glock out, so just treat your ridez the same way.

Re: never let anyone borrow your car

These cars are not Honda Civics...

Any fast or expensive car must be treated with respect. Such power can be overwhelming to people who have never experienced it. For some reason, people want to push the car to the limit to get the most out of the experience while not knowing where the limits are or how to handle the car.

Never ask to borrow or test drive an expensive car unless you accept full responsibility for it and vice versa, never lend out a car unless the person borrowing accepts full responsibility...

Remember that Columbian Helicopter owner in "Clear and Present Danger"?
Harrison Ford "How much for the Helicopter?"
    Columbian "2 million dollars"
Harrison Ford "I'll need to take it out and test it"
    Columbian "I'll need a deposit"
    Harrison Ford "How much?"
    Columbian "2 million dollars"

Well, I can't say you didn't ask for it lending a car out to that gold digging paris model. I bet she didn't pay for the damage did she?

I get a lot of crap for not letting others drive my cars. I never budge, though. I'd rather have someone badger me than see my car damaged.

Only people who have driven my NSX besides me are my Mom, Dad and brother. Coincidentally they're the only people who never asked to drive it, as well as the few people who could afford to replace it.

Actually in all fairness I lent it to her of my own accord, to learn how to drive stick on- and an SUV backed into her (I confirmed with a witness), so it was not her fault there. We all ended up settling it all real low ball- $350 cash with the girls husband and all was well. As it was my track/beater car, it wasn't that big of a deal- believe me when I say that car had seen better days on the exterior that was just a link in the chain.

In fact, the day I sold it.. (funny story here).. it was sitting in my garage just detailed when I went inside with the parking brake set. I came out and I thought someone had grabbed the keys and moved it. As it turned out, it popped out of 1st and had rolled down the drive way- a 45 degree hill for 15 yards, coming to rest in a bush with no literally no damage on it. doh..

Entirely understandable- their is a very short list of people I trust on the track whom I trust implicitly as they are proven better than me, and outside of that it seems to be ok to have absolutes in life.

Re: never let anyone borrow your car

My wifes uncle came to visit on business,,..he has a Mitsu 3000gt that has been modded to hell and back it has about 700hp (when it is running) my wife decides that while he is here he can drive my car rather than get a rental ...I said HELL NO!!....she couldn't understand what the issue was..I told her that if she wanted to loan him a car soo bad that he could drive her car and she would drive our minivan beater....she reluctantly agreed....she learned to NEVER offer my car to borrow even to a family that has much experance driving sports cars.
