Default trunk won't stay up

This past weekend I purchased a 1993 NSX. It's a red car black interior and its a beauty.

Right now I want to correct a couple problems, the first is that the trunk lid doesn't stay in the up position. It appears to me that the first thing I should do is replace the support cylinders...does this sound right?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

That's right. You can buy new ones or have your old ones rebuilt. About 3 years ago, I had mine rebuilt at a place called Strutwise Tech Services in Canada ( 604-589-1200). The guy did a super job and they still work like new . I've heard on Prime that sometimes the new ones don't hold up as well.

PM Chopsjazz (Ken). He has a guy in Canada that rebuilds them and he'll give you the information. He did mine for me and they are fantastic.

Congratulations on getting your car.

There is a vendor here on prime selling a set for $50. Tha included ball studs.

That is probably the best way to go. OEM will run you about $110. Rebuilding will run you about $100.

But remember,, probably only one is bad,, when you get the new pair, when you remove the old ones,, one will be hard to push in with your hands, and the other will push easy,, thats the bad one,, keep the one thats good as a back-up for the future,,

I guess I don't understand the comment about OEM's not holding up. I replaced my original struts in May of 2008. That's 12 years of use.

I bought OEM replacements on-line from a Honda/Acura dealer for $61.84, including shipping. I have nothing against rebuilts, but the price was within $5, so I went for OEM. Looks like I have to wait another 9 1/2 years to see if they last as long as the originals.

Big_D said his SOS ones aren't holding up after a year, not OEM ones.

I have a pair of new oem ones and rebuilt ones. I can say the rebuilt ones are easier to use and works better for me.

Granted I don't use my trunk much but my SOS units seem to be working fine. You might've got a bad pair.

Will this work on the aftermarket units ?

My next problem is a couple of the speakers sound bad, lots of static, and may need to be replaced. one is in the passenger door the other is between the seats. I plan to check the vendors section here, any other suggestions?

My third and seems to be the last issue is I put windshield washer solution in the reservoir and it all leaked out, I haven't had a chance yet to work on this I plan to check this out tomorrow. Is this a common problem?

thanks for all the help.

I suggest you contact member Briank...he rebuilds the speakers. The center speaker is driven by the amp in the passenger footwell under the carpet. In his signature he has links to his website with "How To" instructions for removing the speakers.

Strutwise fixed my trunk struts years ago. They are just like new. Not sure what the process is, but he turned them around in less than a week and they have been great ever since. seems like magic.

I replaced my trunk struts with SoS about a year ago, and they are starting to get weak. Ended up getting a Type-R wing, and it's light enough that the struts can still handle it. Still, though, I would go OEM if I had to do it again.

Placed an order with BrianK; got the right speaker assembly out today, going to do the footwell tomorrow.

The washer fluid leaking was just a disconnected hose, problem solved.

Thanks for all the advice.

You won't be able to lock the top section. My simple solution:

It appears your wiring harness may have gotten pinched at some point since the insulation is peeled back. I was having the same issue so maybe keep an eye on that.
