I live in Maryville and was on the Dragon when he passed me going the other way, caught up with him at Deal's Gap and we had the cars side-by-side in the parking lot, nice little crowd gathered. Unreal his car has over 250,000 miles on her, nice guy.

Hugh, that's the best video I've ever seen on the Dragon. Looks like you had a fairly smooth run there pal! Not much traffice and especially light on the weekend - actually surprisingly void of traffic. Great stuff. Reminds me of the roads in Georgia in the mountains here. Guess I really don't need to go to the Dragon - but it really looks like a great section of road - actually just like Hwy 60 outside of Dahlonega - where the gold was found in GA. Cool - I enjoyed the ride. How fast were you going? You were in second gear the whole time- actually didn't shift at all hardly. I went back and watched it with the volume on - I could tell exactly what you were doing. I was watching it at work earlier which prompted my earlier comments. I can't wait to get my car back up in the mountains. What fun - and that my friends is what driving on the east coast is all about.
I would like to see a similar drive out west - but I bet you'd have a chance to shift into third out there. Little more open country and the curves would be a little more sweeping I'd guess. Fun! Another question Hugh - what kind of video camera were you using and how did you rig it in the car so it was firmly mounted? I need to get one of those! We should all take videos when we get on roads like that - tour america vicariously thru our Primer videos - how bout that? Again Great stuff and thanks a bunch for posting and making this video. Where are you located anyway?

The mount for the camera is the trusty Panavise 809. The camera is a Canon A590 IS digicam. It is set to record at 640 x 480 at 20 fps. Nothing fancy at all but great results which even surprised me.

No question, you're pretty in pink! Great drive and great video. It felt as if I was sitting next to you-- being there without being there. Enjoyed it very much. See ya soon when you get back.

Next time, for your safety, ask to check his trunk + NEVER accept an ICE PACK from him, even if there's 150F

great video. Would you recommend the suction cup you mentioned? Have you ever mounted it to your door or outside on the car? I have always wanted to get one just never pulled the trigger.

A very nice guy named Roger now owns my car, I will return one day, after the kids are older.

Wow! You actually sold it. Roger bought himself one pristine NSX, that's for sure. Enjoy your time with the kids Eric, their youth is irreplaceable. You will be back!

At a cost of $16 I have no complaints. I wouldn't trust it on anything other than glass though.

Damn, Hugh---you and Eric were on the Dragon a couple of days before I was on the Cherohala. My wife and I hit it from Tellico Plains at about 7 am last Saturday and it was great. No traffic at all except for a couple of guys out tracking their bear dogs and 2 bikers.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Since I-40 was blocked, we came back over the mountains on US 441 from Cherokee to Gatlinburg on Sunday night about 9. That was sweet, too. Not a whole lot of traffic there either except for 3 grey wolves.

What's the deal with those bear dogs? There were tons of guys with them when I was there. Most of them were holding little receivers with funky looking antennae.

You tell me. One guy had something that looked a Klingon torture device and I had to ask what the hell it was before he told me, "Oh, that's to find my dawg down in this valley chasing bears." I'm sure I had a WTF look but he was really a nice guy, almost apologetic that he was bothering us.
