Default ScienceofSpeed Laminova Intercooler for ScienceofSpeed/Comptech Supercharger System

ScienceofSpeed has begun manufacturing of an intercooler (aftercooler) for the NSX to be used in conjunction with ScienceofSpeed and Comptech (CT Engineering) supercharger systems.

The placement of an intercooler in the NSX with a positive displacement supercharger is very limiting due to packaging constraints. Currently available intercoolers use a fabricated bar and plate radiator core sandwiched between the supercharger and intake manifold. However, due to the small plenum size available above the core and uneven distribution of the discharge from the supercharger, these systems peak at 42% thermal efficiency in our testing.

ScienceofSpeed has developed an intercooler design based on the Laminova intercooler core. The Laminova intercooler core is a revolutionary design that consists of single piece extruded aluminum cores that offer much higher efficiency due to the larger surface area and unique flow around the cores.

http://www.opcon.se/index.asp?sPage=1&langID=2&cID=15

The Laminova cores are now used on various supercharged OEM vehicles such as the Corvette ZR1, Cobalt SS, and Cadillac STS-V.

Although significantly more expensive than welded cores, the Laminova intercooler design offers additional advantages other than efficiency. The one piece extruded cores are housed in a machined aluminum housing with machined aluminum end caps. This design eliminates welding requirements for a solid sealed assembly. The design also allows us to dip the intercooler assembly into the intake manifold to decrease blower height. The overall increase in height is only 1.3".

Using 90 F coolant, at 10,500 l/min of air flow (which is where our system produces the most torque) we expect a 133.3 F inlet temp reduction (65.9% thermal efficiency). At 16,800 l/min of air flow (which is at peak power) we expect a 107.6 F inlet temp reduction. Based on these performance estimates, this will translate to 13% increase at peak torque and 11% increase at peak power points. We expect to begin performance testing in 2-3 weeks with our prototype unit.

Much thanks to the engineers with Laminova and our machine shop for working with us on this project.

Cheers,
-- Chris

Will this need a FMIC?

Any ideas on price Chris?

Sorry, we are still working on pricing. We hope to be very competitive despite the increased cost of the billet housing and Laminova cores. This intercooler will require that you have the "bolt on" supercharger intake manifold which is included in our supercharger systems. Comptech began using this around 2002 and later.

The system will use a front mounted heat exchanger along with a pump and reservoir. Here is a simplified diagram of this.

Cheers,
-- Chris

Do you have a replacement targa brace that will fit over this intercooler?

How difficult is this to install?

Chris,

This is a beautiful unit and one that I always knew you would spend the time to develop further and produce when your super charger could benefit from it. I can't wait to see the finished product.

Great job!!

You keep coming up with this stuff and I'm never going to be able to save any money...

Will this work with the Comptech engine cover for targa cars, or is it going to be too tall?

+1 Very interested to know this. The other intercoolers are too tall and require you to remove the engine cover.

Chris, As I stated in our emails I can not wait until this is released.. The car we just did is a perfect candidate for this unit when it is released. I have already spoken to him about it and he is interested to see what it can do.

Thanks for developing this Chris!

Do worry, Chris is installing a lightly used 2005 engine and the SOS supercharger w/AEM on my car hopefully today. After it is tuned and dynoed Chris will install the new intercooler (when ready) and get the numbers for that.

I've instructed Chris to release write-up, photos, numbers, etc of the build to help those on this board who may be on the fence about the SOS supercharger and/or the new intercooler.

Plus I'm getting the new RPS carbon clutch, so I will give some feedback on that when I get the car back.

I had a design for the same application back in 05. Glad someone finally followed through. My calculations showed that 4 cores was a bit on the small side, However.

The more cores, the better for sure. However, you're limited in how many cores you can place in to the intake manifold and keep the height of the supercharger reasonable.

Here are some updated photos.

Cheers,

Someone needs to make a glass supercharger so that thing can be admired. It deserves to be on display somewhere. What does it weigh?

They(Rex and Mike) are definately "Artists" when it comes to figuring this stuff out BUT ultimatley it started with you!

Funny you say that about the NSX......just took an offer on the 911,LOL!!
But that will be another topic!

I am looking forward to see how this idea works..it may lend itself to a few other applications as well!

Testing has been completed to validate the design producing significant gains in power and torque by reducing inlet charge temperatures up to 98 degrees .

A ScienceofSpeed Supercharger System was first installed non-intercooled. The standard system with AEM EMS upgrade was installed on a NSX. A fast action open element air intake temperature sensor was installed in the intake manifold to log temperatures during dyno testing. The non-intercooled system produced a peak of 375 wheel horsepower with operating temperatures begining at 172 degrees F and ending at 246 degrees F at redline.

Then, the ScienceofSpeed Laminova Supercharger Intercooler was installed. No changes were made to the supercharger and the existing pulley was used. The system, even at idle, lowered intake temperature by 67 degrees, at mid-range lowered by 98 degrees, and at redline 81 degrees.

The car was then repetitively tested with loaded back to back pulls with approximately 5 seconds between pulls simulating real world use. The results were impressive with less than a 2-3 degree inlet temperature change and almost no measurable difference in power.

The car's power increased by 37 wheel hp and 34 wheel tq with no changes to the pulley to increase boost. In fact, the car made 416 wheel horsepower with less boost - only 7.6 psi. With a modified engine, the system is capable of producing more than 500 wheel horsepower.

graph:

The intercooler produces not only more power, but also increases reliability and safety from the engine while decreasing emissions and fuel consumption.

The ScienceofSpeed Laminova Supercharger Intercooler is designed for use with all ScienceofSpeed Supercharger Systems, and any Comptech / CT-Engineering Supercharger based on the Autorotor 1.7L compressor. ScienceofSpeed Supercharger Systems do not require any further upgrades to be used with the intercooler. Comptech / CT-Engineering Superchargers must upgrade both engine management and fuel systems (please inquire).

I'm sorry, it will not. The system is currently designed only for the ScienceofSpeed Supercharger System and Comptech/CT-Engineering superchargers with the 1.7L Autorotor supercharger.
