NSX owners, what are you views on the Audi v10 R8?

I don't like it's design, too much TT in it. Technically maybe interesting but an Audi at that price tag??? Allwheel drive?
They face a very high depreciation in Europe as far as I've seen. Sold for $ 200k, now 100-120k just after 2 years. It will be hard for it in the shadow of the Lambos.

I'm a big fan of the R8. I think I would pick it over most of the other sub $200k cars out there. Mostly based on my assumption that it's going to be reliable and can hold 200,000+ miles without major issues. Of course I had the same assumption on the Toyota powered Lotus elise and exige and from what I hear they're not reliable at all.

People above make a good point though that you could get a used F430 or Lambo for the same price. I guess it depends on if it's going to be a garage queen or if you're going to drive it.

I've also thought and said publicly that the Audi R8 is technicall very very similar to the NSX.
In that respect, it IS in many ways the successor to the NSX.

Having said that, however, there are still many things I don't like in the R8.

First of all, technically speaking, it does NOT do what the NSX did.
It is FAR too TOO HEAVY be really fast, even with its 420 HP engine.
I mean, you are building a aluminum sportscar and yet they managed to make it weigh more than 3520 lbs (1600kg).

Second, it simply doesn' have the usability of the NSX. Everyone will probably have read that Honda specifically designed the NSX to have enough trunk space to put a reasonable amount of stuff in there. The R8 simply can't.

Third, the interior of the R8 looks very nice, but in fact it just looks like a copy of any other high-end Audi.

And yes, the R8 in reality is not much more than a very stretched Audi TT.
Why do you think Audi put those " sideblades" on the car?
Well, very simply put, to "hide" the long-tail effect of the car which otherwise would become very, very obvious.

Has enyone of you in the US already looked at the new Audi TT-RS with its 340 HP 5-cilinder engine? It's practically as fast as the R8 for 1/3 the price.

And that my last gripe with the R8.
If you look at the 1991 NSX and take a look at the 2006 Audi R8.
Would you really say that the difference in refinement and performance is 15 year of automotive development ??

How much would be needed to take a ordinary NSX to the same level of performance?

Last, I just took a quick look on just two car-sale websites.
At this moment there are around 540 Audi R8's for sale JUST IN GERMANY ALONE !!
In all of Europe I see 670 R8's for sale !!
I believe total production is around 8500 so far.

There are other cars Id buy first for $160k

Murci
430

and so on.......

Well said, Maarten. I believe the R8 will be a disaster like the VW Phaeton. Do you want to have a car with the same engine in every other model throughout the whole VW concern? The TT-RS with have of the price of a R8 will bastadise and vandalise the resale value of a R8. They should have better concentrated on Lambo.

looks ok in magazines but rediculously awesome in person. Specs smecks. People argue over power and handling. I bet an evo with 20k in mods can outhandle it but who cares it's gives you what you want from it.

Everyone is making suggestions so I'll throw you mine, pick up a 355 and let me break it in for you.

btw: at my prev job a coworker ordered an R8 from the dealer and was receiving offers before he even got it.

MvM and GoldNSX, have you actually driven the R8? Just wondering if your opinions are based on what you've read, or what you've experienced first hand.

I don't read car magazines and don't have to to say what I've said. :) If it's that good why are there 500+ cars waiting for a buyer? The R8 will be a flop as (and how) it looks regardless how good it drives. :)

No, I have not driven the R8 although I would love to try it. Have sat in it. Very cosy, but also more like a bathtub (in a nice way). Very much RS4 inside.

As far as my opinion is concerned, it's based on the R8's I've seen and checked out in real life.
The first time, everyone is like WOW !!
The second time it's like, oh, is that the new TT ?
The third time it's like, heh, it's an Audi...
The fact that most buyers take it in the standard 'lease' colors like silver or black doesn't help the car either.

No pun intended, for all it's worth, the R8 is technically an very good sportscar. It was hailed as a (very good) competitor to the Porsche 911 when it came out (you will remember that the NSX got the label also).
But now it seems that everyone is back into buying the Porsche again.

The problem with EVERY HALO-car like the R8 is that it's ONLY a halo-car until the next model comes onto the market.
Being a smaller and somewhat more ordinary brother to the Gallardo I'd say that most people would buy the Lambo because the Lambo doesn't compare or look like any other car. More or less like the NSX doesn't look like any other Honda.
Just last week when I was going home from work in the evening, I had a R8 tailing me for about 20 km and I didn't even notice it was a R8 until I left the highway. All that time I saw it behind me, I had just mistaken it for just an Audi. Have to admit though it was almost dark so I mainly saw it's headlights, but I think you will get my point.

I think the R8 is gorgeous. It MIGHT look like a TT in photos, but in person you would have to be blind to think it is a TT.

I do with they gave it a more unique motor in the V8 instead of putting the same motor as the RS4 in there. At least tweak it to 450HP or so.

Of course at least it is an RS4 motor and a V8 instead of a Legend V6 :)

It's got that FROG look that I can't get over :frown:

I see the same, and IMO 911's and TT's have similar silhouettes.

It does give a different impression in the flesh than in photographs. I like the car but it does not have that stand out exotic look. It's a German thing.

^ Hey I know that car!

That's the R8 I got to drive and its simply an amazing car. It is the NSX of current...

^ Hey I know that car too!

I like the R8, and would probably have one or a Gallardo if i had the scratch.

+1:smile:

i did see one at the strip club last night, it looked nice in person but nobody i was with noticed it. EVERYBODY noticed the gallardo.

I don't think anyone will say the R8 will ever get more attention than a Gallardo, but from a maintenance and reliability standpoint I would like to know how they compare.

I would rather have a new R8 with a 4year 50K warranty than a 3 year old Gallardo that might break the bank the first time it has a problem.

Keep in mind the R8's pictured above are the older V8 models and definitely less aggressive than the new V10 models....

I have yet to see a V10 out on the road but will snap a few pictures next time I catch one. Audi has really improved the aggressive nature of the new V10 model with many subtle but apparent design upgrades. Most subtle is the fender flares and larger front and rear fascias.

Reliability is anyone's guess but would prefer a R8 with a full Audi warranty package vs. a 06 Gallardo with no warranty.

Many people would say we're crazy for buying a Honda at that price tag...

Exactly

That is why I said in my original post not to compare price or horsepower since those are obvious. Price is strictly relative to each person. What's expensive to you may not be the same as me or anyone else....

But assuming you would write the check, which car would you buy? I'm really in love with the v10 R8 but certainly not in a position to buy it right now. Just debating what to do down the road as I see that as the logical stepping stone for me or otherwise it will be a 360 Stradale.

Audi R8 looks so bulky. I don´t like
There are many R8s in Germany. Nothing special.

Hi Hong,

Long time
I agree with you. The R8 is a BIG car compared to the NSX. And I didn't find the interior that much roomier than the NSX at all.
And most off all, you always see the R8 in really dull colors in my opinion.
Although I must admit that a R8 in red would probably just not look right.
