Another '02 conversion thread

So I'm at the point where I either take a dump or get off the pot.

I'm at crossroads with my NSX. Its too modified to sell at any rate to remotely recoup my costs. I still love and lust after it. Seems the best thing to do is go for the last mod left on my TDL and go for the '02 conversion.

I plan to do it over the coming winter, at my friend's shop...which will save me the hassle of downtime and winter storage (that's how I'll present it to the wifey).

Only doing the front end for now, as I'm patiently waiting for the FXMD F430 rear end to finish development (damnit).

Prob will also sell the bigasswing and tone it down for regular street duty and enjoy.

My question is, for those who have read this far, is which conversion to go with? I prefer oem but cannot justify the costs, so looking at DF and maybe something like Cantrell or even from Japan. Just want to see what opinions are.

Thanks for reading :wink::cool:

Here I am now:

Taitec...never considered it. How's fitment? I know DF is very good.

The lights for sure are OEM. The hood and bumper can be aftermarket. I have the Taitec bumper (GT-One) and a generic OEM style CF hood. The fitment is not bang on, it's a little off. Depending on how perfect you want it to look, you might have to go OEM. From what I've read, DF and Taitec are similar in terms of fitment. I think you saw it briefly when you were down at the Royal York Hotel 2 years ago.

The pic you have for the 02 converted NSX, the hood section on top of the driver side light (also where the driver hood pin is) is a bit higher. It doesnt look flush. This is the same for my hood, but on the passenger side headlight.

Great to see you in my thread! How's my old wing doing? Wanna sell it back?

Who did you go to for the Taitec nose and hood? Is it even possible to buy GT-One anymore? I want to maintain the flat underbelly so I'm definitely in need of the NSXR style vented hood.

I still have the wing. Best purchase ever!! With JETZ gone, it's going to be tough getting a good fitting type R wing for cheap.

I got the bumper from Speedstar.com. I think Taitec bought out GT-One. I just checked their website, and damn did prices jump. I got mine for less than $1100 taxes in, shipped to the store. The list price now is $1900!!! But that is with the lip. You'll need to call in to get the actual price since they claim it depends on the exchange rate.

Two things about the Taitec bumper, first, there are no bumper holes. So, when mounting the bumper beam brackets onto the frame of the car, you'll only be able to put in 2 out of the 3 bolts for each side (assuming you stick with the OEM bumper beam). If you go with a custom beam or a procar one (one that is shorter), you will be able to put in the third bolt. Two bolts are enough to secure the beam. I used a custom ITR beam and a STMPO front lower chassis bar for rigidity.

Second, there is not tow hook cover. You'll have to use the lower tow hooks.

Richie has the DF NSX-R style vented hood, and I remember him saying the passenger side fitment where the headlight is not flush. Similar to mine.

If my car was highly modified like yours and wanted to do something else, I would go Madonna widebody. But you also would have to invest in the 02 headlights and widebody wheels. Certainly ain't cheap if you go this route.

I am actually pricing out the Madonna kit as I write this

I would prefer non WB though, since I personally think its a sacrilege to lose all that good aluminum, but we'll see what the quote is. I treat boredom with throwing more money at my aging classic.

+1 for another madonna widebody. imo, it's the only NSX widebody out there that still retains the NSX lines.

If you're not considering OEM, look nowhere else but DF, that's what I chose.

As quoted on DF's website:

DF made sure to utilize the factory bumper caps because it is the only way to access the two very important bumper frame mounting that is not available on any other aftermarket front bumper from China or Japan. This makes fitment adjustment and installation easier.

That line had me sold and besides, Peter is a charm to work with.

Add a Downforce Bumper Cross Bar in CF (which I also bought) and your car will look hotter than pancakes.

Their NSX 2002+ Gen 2 Conversion Package will have everything covered that you won't need to make a trip to Acura for parts such as bumper seals and gaskets.

Close up of my Taitec bumper. Sorry about the pic size. Slightly larger gap between hood and bumper since the hood is also aftermarket.

Crash test. Bumper still holds.

That white NA1 in Spain looks weird with fender/bumper fitments.

That's not quite the case with this one: http://nsxprime.com/forum/showthread.php?t=128161

OMG!!! Jin, when did that happen?????

Coming out from a junction the front driver stop suddenly without good reason. I did not see him stop because of the blind spot (he was far left and I am driving on the right hand side) so there was a thud. His exhaust fell off and my left headlamp broke. It happen last years June.

Ran into dablackgoku on the highway the other day, 02 front end is really appealing, especially in black. All you need to finish the look is the 02 R hood.

Oyagi, your car was my inspiration in keeping my pop-ups (when closed lol). I say leave it how it is and maybe put the R wing back on. I have enough pics of your car saved for reference :).

Hope that helps your situation a little bit :p

I vote Madonna kit of leave it as is. Car looks great now, just de-tune it and loose the wing. Perhaps another set of wheels just to change things up and your set!

For reference, here's my car back when I had the R-wing (now owned by dablackgoku):

Just got a quote back from my importer. Route KS Madonna kit will only work as a complete kit (I was hoping I could just get the front bumper) and they want $6500 plus tax shipped. Headlights are extra and Route KS can get the R type lamps too (white centers). Assuming $1500 for the lights plus paint and labour, I'm looking at around $10-11K for the entire conversion. Just bought a bigger house this year so I don't think I can pull it off (this year).

Might be looking at the DF front end after all.

To jvu: I'm torn between the popups and the '02 conversion. Both have their appeals and depending on the day and the way the wind blows I find one is more attractive over the other. I think the main attraction of the newer nose is the loss of weight and the fact it changes the "face" of the car a little.

Decisions...

Or sell it :frown:

I admit I have a lot of "just sell it" thoughts as well, but I know I'll just pick up another, newer NSX. After crunching numbers, it seems the most economical thing to do is to just keep mine and continuously update it :)
