DIY: OEM Alpine Head Unit Capacitor Replacement

I got the big three out of the head unit today. Only one was leaking. I’m tempted to just replace these and call it a day given the risk that I damage something in trying to replace the other ~80 caps. Or is there a list of understood “common” problem caps I should replace and call it good?

    NSX climate control repair, NSXe-repair.com

@Brian - I hope this isn't overstepping... but I thought I would post here about your willingness to support a DIY'er. Folks - Brian was nice enough to send me the 13 caps required to do the recap. (My 1991 HVAC was not working right... turns out about half of the caps had some level of...

DIY: OEM Alpine Head Unit Capacitor Replacement

I'm going through a recap proactively for my head unit. Thankfully, everything looks ok so far so hopefully the recap goes smoothly. I had to make some edits to the digikey cart with some bits that were obsolete (or not in stock.) Hope this helps those folks who might be looking to give this a go.

Feedback on headless audio system plan

Hi All, I made some progress in the last couple weeks and I'm back with questions now that I've gotten a closer look at where these plugs are buried! Mostly around the fact that the space on the driver side seems impossible to get to without removing the full dash. What is a tap harness...

Add GPS Navigation to clock spot, + outdoor temp, back-up camera, traffic, radar

Here’s the rear of the unit with one of the mounting options. This makes it easy as I just need a roughly similar trapezoid to drill mounting holes into. The trapezoid is 2.5 tall. The top (long) dimension is 4.5” and the bottom is 3.625”. It can rotate and flip so I think if you make the face...

Add GPS Navigation to clock spot, + outdoor temp, back-up camera, traffic, radar

I'll print you one if you get the same one. Just come up to SF one of these days! Or I'll come down for car week. =)

Add GPS Navigation to clock spot, + outdoor temp, back-up camera, traffic, radar

That would be awesome! I’m trying to figure out which one might be best. The leading contender is this one.

Feedback on headless audio system plan

Oh, in other news, the tweeter sash bits from MITA finally came back in stock so I ordered a pair along with the rear pair since mine are about to fall apart. Related question, anyone have a reco for an apple car play unit that has dash cam and backup cam functions? I’m considering this one...

Feedback on headless audio system plan

Gotcha thx. I’ll be back with questions I’m sure! Waiting for some connector parts and should be able to get moving then. I should probably work on my yoga in the meantime so I can get in there and find all these plugs!

    Buyer beware of Formula Faraz

I sent feedback but wanted to cover my bases here. I'm really sad to do this actually, but I've been patient and now Faraz has ghosted me. It may not make a difference for me but maybe it will help someone in the future. This is in reference to my purchase of the 1991 car here: Faraz was...

Add GPS Navigation to clock spot, + outdoor temp, back-up camera, traffic, radar

Reviving and old thread, but I'm considering printing this but adding an apple car play dash cam/backup cam instead of the garmin. Any chance anyone has done this and has options for the actual unit itself plus modifications that may be required for the 3D print? I'm happy to print a couple if...

Feedback on headless audio system plan

Ah right. Can you help me understand the details of the tap harness? Why is it 20P? Which plugs does it connect to?Anything else that I'm not thinking of already? Thanks!

Space may indeed be the main issue. Do all those wires end up back at the end of the head unit? Might it be easier to intercept the wires there?

Feedback on headless audio system plan

After studying the ETM, it looks like I would want to pick up the wires for the doors at C601 or C602 on the driver side and C651 or C652 on the passenger side. Am I reading these right?

Feedback on headless audio system plan

Thanks for the input. I'm going to get the Mita window sash tweeter mount so no door card modifications needed. I am doing some sound deadening in the doors. I didn't go crazy, but I did manage to get about 3 sq ft of dynamat style material on the inner and outer doorskins. I'll also be using...

Feedback on headless audio system plan

Hi all, I'm planning a "headless" audio system upgrade with the following main elements: Take OEM headunit out of the equation (but leave in place to keep the OEM look). Utilize the Sony xm-gs6dsp with built in bluetooth/DSP (and an auxiliary line in) as the source and DSP and amplifier for an...
