NSX owners, what are you views on the Audi v10 R8?

As many have said, the Audi R8 is a worthy successor to the NSX. Aluminum, mid engine, 4 wheel drive. Audi made the next generation NSX. The R8 does look great, much better in the flesh than the pictures would suggest. I would be happy to own one once the prices of used ones come down. But look...

I need a coffee maker for the office

I know a little bit about coffee. It depends what they mean by a decent coffee maker. There are many that will cost over 4 or 5 grand for the home user before you even get into industrial. Ask them what they want! They might want drip, hope so for your sake. Or they might want espresso. Two...

    Interesting physics/logic riddle

Correct! I was confident that you would be able to see that. I am sure you can see where I am going with this. So if we release the friction brake on both bikes and forget about any friction in the system. Once we get our flywheels up to speed we are doing the same amount of work. But when we...

    Interesting physics/logic riddle

Ping Excellent! I totally understand everything you are saying. Please indulge me and answer a few more questions to see if what you are stating makes sense. Remember those old fashioned exercise bikes? The ones with a brake caliper on the flywheel on the front. And you could adjust the brake...

    Interesting physics/logic riddle

So I think that we all agree that if there is no friction then the plane takes off. I did go back and read your previous post and I think I understand what our disconnect is. You stated that “So the end result is that the entire wheel/belt assembly will exert a single force in the direction...

    Controversial Top Gear episode

Hmm, I have to agree on all points. There are places in most countries where it is not safe to do some things or say some things or even just be there at the wrong time. In a perfect world you should be able to do anything that is legal without fear of reprisal but unfortunately, as we all know...

    Interesting physics/logic riddle

If the belt operator is told to match the planes “speed” then by definition, as the planes speed changes the operator will have to CHANGE the belt speed to match. That CHANGE in speed IS acceleration because acceleration is just a change in speed. But we don’t have to call out acceleration...

    Interesting physics/logic riddle

    100% all good.

    Interesting physics/logic riddle

Just because the thrust of the plane is “independent” of the opposing force due to wheel friction. Does not mean that the two opposing forces can not be in equilibrium. If you read the puzzle to mean that the belt operator can apply any speed then the plane will not take off. Regards, Patrick

    Interesting physics/logic riddle

Well, as you say if the wheels explode then the plane does not take off. But to be fair to the “The plane will take off” camp, we should (for the sake of an interesting argument) deem the wheels to be indestructible. Now, there is no upper limit to the friction that can be applied to the...

    Interesting physics/logic riddle

If the belt is moving at a constant speed and that speed is enough to cause enough drag on the wheels to balance the max thrust of the aircraft then the plane will not move. We don’t need to concern ourselves with acceleration to demonstrate this. Regards, Patrick

    Interesting physics/logic riddle

What!? Forget about the Thrust and the Friction? That’s the whole puzzle right there. How about we forget about the plane as well and then we wont have to think about anything? If we forget abut the thrust then of course the plane can never take off. Providing we do have thrust and we forget...

    Interesting physics/logic riddle

So looking at nicholas421 previous posts, I’m pretty sure he gets it but I think that most people are struggling to understand this and throwing in “Acceleration” is not going to help any. Please read my post # 89 to understand why you wont be able to push the toy car on the treadmill. The...
