17/18 with wide fenders: Is anyone running a 245/40/17 in the front?

I'm very familiar with the 'proper sizing' of tires for the NSX and how that affects TCS. I am here to talk about running a 245/40 in the front of an NSX. Specifically with widened fenders by metal work, downforce fenders, SOS fenders, Dali fenders, Kite fenders, etc. I know a 235/40 works with downforce fenders. I want to know how far off is the 245/40 from working. Threads have been made in the past and they are outdated. I am looking for experience with running that wide of a tire in the front without rubbing. Preferably on a 17x9" +22 rim.

The tire selection for this size is vast and a larger front is ideal for the way my setup is heading. I can run a 235 any time so it isn't like I am out of options. I just want to know if 245s are being run in the front by anyone. Did the seam need to be grinded down? Incase anyone was wondering there are over 70 choices for tires in this size. http://www.tirerack.com/tires/TireS...rformance=ALL&width=245/&ratio=40&diameter=17

This isn't about going to a smaller size that fits and this isn't about going to a larger rim. This is about figuring out how to make a 245/40 work without mutilating the car. My current idea is to run downforce fenders or FXMD fenders(if they ever come out) with the 17x9 +22 rim and a spacer to clear larger brakes and add room for the tire from lock to lock. The only people I know of with wide fenders on the site are @stuntman @RYU @Caroline-NSX @CB72 and with 17x9 on the front are @socold57 @MaydayJohnP Dimer . Please chime in with your thoughts on the possibility of it working if you don't mind.

Seems like a lot of work for 10mm...

That is one way to look at it Hapa. The other way to look at it is;

1.) A good fit for a x9" wheel
2.) A much larger selection of tire choices
3.) The ability to run better performance brand tires that match front to rear
4.) A better setup for me personally with 245f/285r

I haven't tried 245/40/17's on the front, but 235/40's fit fairly well under the Cantrell Concepts 30mm wider fenders on our LoveFab car.

There is some rub at full lock in the back of the fenderwell (need to do a little adjusting there) but 245's would only make that worse.

This is on +35mm 17x8's, with a 25mm spacer.

Hope that helps,
Brian

Thanks sca037 for the response. I assumed the best chance to fit the 245 under will be with a set of fenders like yours. I know Dimer runs 245s but I don't know if he rubs at full lock also.

I have the Downforce front fenders with 235/40*17 tires.
They do rub specially when the car is on the lower perch of the Bilstein shocks with Zanardi springs.
Fitting 245/40*17 tires is almost equivalent to fitting 215/45*17 tires that are well known not to fit as far as I know?

I love the ambition here, but I see shattered front fenders in your future. If not, please share all the specs.

I don't see shattered fenders Jinks being the problem. I am more worried about the tire hitting the inner metal body of the car. Similar issue that Brian has with his car and the 235s.

Cool man. Looks like unchartered waters here. Great luck to you trying something new here. Keep us posted please.

It looks like the size is 2mm taller than a 215/45. Probably would have been easier to see if someone was able to successfully get a 45 under the front. I wish the market was bigger for 245/35 as they are smaller than the 235/40 and even the 215/40(only by .5mm).

As you and stuntman stated, its the inner wall that is most important. None of this is uncharted. Not much is on a 25yr old car.

Kip Olson ran 245/40/17 & 295/30/18 on custom wheels with DF front fenders. No liners. Not sure of his offset but I can find out if requested.

I have been contemplating this same project for quite a while. I currently run 235/40/17 & 285/30/18 on 8s & 10s with stock rolled fenders and trimmed liners.
I want to upgrade to 245/40/17 & 315/30/18 on 9s & 11s. Once I have the wheels, we'll 'adjust' the bodywork to fit.

I'm running 245/40-17 305 35 18 on Toyo R888's.

It's definitely do-able with wider fenders/flares. The R888's also run very large compared to many other tires out there.
I still have trimmed liners and run the over-fender flares I have. It is tight but is do-able.

1K2GO can you get more information on the setup. Wheel offset, downforce fender sizing(normal 20mm or 30mm), did it rub at full lock, etc. Oh, and who's sideskirts are those on Kip's NSX? That is the same design that I was going to build for mine.

@nsxot1c Can you give some feedback on your setup? What tire, wheel size/offset, does it rub, and how much wider are the flares(in mm)? Thanks for showing off your car. Looks great.

I found out that the ADVANCE flatout NSX also runs a 245/40/17 in the front and a 285 in the rear for street and track. It is using the ADVANCE wide fenders however. I'm not sure on the dimensions of the fenders however.

Jesus this set up looks ridiculously good! What tires? Front fenders look wider but I think its just an illusion since you are running aggressive size tires. Awesome.

Reading owns. lol

I have not yet tried 245s but I can provide some educated guesses. I have various front wheels in various sizes from 8-8.5" widths and from 215 to 235. I'm running the max amount of neg camber the stock suspension will provide at any given ride height (max neg cam is important in terms of this kind of fitment question). On my DF fenders I'm pretty sure I could fit 245s easily but sizing of the wheel offset and ride height would be important to consider.

Here's some quantitative feedback. Let's discuss my Advan RS's which are 17x8+37
* With a 235 these do not rub my inside wheel well.
* These do not rub with the DF fenders
* I actually run a 15mm spacer in the front to have my 215s on my RS's now (temporary tire) so they don't look too far sunk in. It looks like I have at least another 10mm potential for a more aggressive offset even still.
* I also had a 18x8.5 +42 on a 215 that which I added a 15mm spacer to and it was still totally fine for very aggressive driving.

I've had aggressive tires for the life of this car so I wouldn't be surprised if tire-to-metal wear have burned off a lot of the alum on the seam by now LOL

Point is.. I really don't see a problem with running 245s with DF fenders but I have yet to try it. I'm pretty happy with 235s. It's enough tire to improve hard braking stability but not too much tire to be laborious on my non-pwr steering car.

I also have various spacers that allow me to run anywhere from 3mm-25mm in added offset

Thanks for the info Billy! 1K2GO, tried doing some creeping on your recent posts but couldnt find any pictures of your car. Please post a pic or two with your 235/40 and 285/30 current set up, thank you sir!

Ryu, any pics of the car with the Df fenders?

I've seen as wide as 17x9.5 +22 in the front under downforce fenders. I know 245s will fit, but I was concerned with whether or not it would be possible to set the car up to be free of rubbing lock to lock. I don't want to only have 60% of my steering because I am running 245s. I am going to run a set on my 17x9 +22. Hoping to be able to get upgraded brakes with a spacer under it as well.
