For some car companies, evolution involves making radical changes at regular intervals to their products in order to maintain their appeal. However, that’s not the way it works at Porsche, whose notoriously fast cars get updated at a notoriously glacial pace, at least in terms of style, even while sometimes major advancements occur under the skin.

Even so, the slight changes that will find their way to the iconic Carrera within the next year or so are not so insignificant as to make it past the watchful eye of our European spy photographers, one of whom chagrinned a Porsche test driver (that was stupid enough to venture onto Germany’s public roads in a future Carrera) by following him about while snapping his Kodachrome away.

Specifically, what he got was a pretty, blue, badge-less 2009 Carrera S clearly showing off new quad-element HID headlamps nestled within the Carrera’s not-new ovoid surrounds. Beneath the familiar frog eyes are enlarged air intakes into which the turn signals are integrated (thankfully in a horizontal arrangement, as opposed to the fang-like design on the 2008 Cayenne). A subtle lower lip extends from the chin spoiler and continues all the way down the bodysides and into the rear bumper. Said bumper has been revised to accommodate wider-set tailpipes and, unfortunately, droopy Cayenne-style LED taillamps.

As for any major mechanical advancements that often accompany styling updates? Porsche has remained typically tight-lipped, but we don’t expect much of a horsepower bump from the 325/355 of the current Carrera/Carrera S…which wouldn’t be such a bad thing, given that from a mechanical standpoint, the 911 has already evolved into virtual perfection.

Yep... looks like a porsch to me! Did they change aything? I can't even tell? (and, yes, I am truly being honest here). To me, a porsche is a porsche unless it's a carrera GT. All I know is they crumble when they hit big trucks

Bob...is that your truck? You done mangled that little Porsche son.
As for the '08 911, I was honestly expecting to finally see something different. Oooh, looks like a Cayman in the back. With the Turbo, what you get for the money is undeniable, but man they really are getting some mileage (pun intended) out of a fifty year old design.
Porsche aficionados will love it.

the engine is still in the wrong place...

That looks like a pretty good "crumple" of the crumple zone for whacking a big truck. Looks like it did its job well.

Interesting that some feel that the 911 design is stale b/c it's basically been the same overall shape 20+ years.

Also interesting that few of us complain about the NSX design...15 years...same shape. It was updated in 1995...same shape...updated in 1997...again same exact shape...updated again in 2002...wait, new headlights, but again...same shape. Is the NSX styling stale?

You forgot to mention "same great design shape" and it's not boring!

Aaah, well, there is a different way of looking at it:
Honda stopped development of the NSX, Period (new headlights etc don’t count).
Not a body panel was changed (hood? Whoa). The interior was stopped dead, engine hasn’t changed (stayed 3.2 for almost 10 years).
There was no new development of the NSX over it years in production. No change.

Porsche, on the other hand has changed lots of things, everything, if fact. Bumpers, engine size, interior, windshield angle, body panels, everything.
It has ALL changed.

But it still looks the same.

Fan I am not. Perhaps at a future unveiling someone get it on film as they stoop and scratch their heads, wondering why they even do it anymore- since everyone already knows what it is going to look like.

No super secret spy shots needed... once again it looks like the last 20 years of Porsches- a bubbly anamorphic VW bug. All the while again retaining that PITA engine bay and gobbles of unneccessary ammenities for the autobahn. IMHO anyone that thinks of the current 911 as being 'virtual perfection' needs another bump on the head.

Porsche virtual perfection at least. Everyone of their new models at least offers significant performance improvements.

EXCLUSIVE LEAK!!!!

Here's a photo of the Porsche 911 2020 release!!!!

You can go on the road with out seeing 2-3 of them!

And still a VW bug base.
Ever seen a Porsche engine up close?
It's tiny! looks like a lawnmower motor!

I got a chuckle out of this one..as with most "Bash other cars" posts which seems to have proliferated on this board recently. I find that the following truths always apply:

1) The rule of "double standards" apply to this car group as with all others which is, "Our car is the best and all others have disqualifying faults that make them utter garbage".

2) How many updates have Porsche made on the 911 in the last 14 years versus Honda to the NSX? How many changes has GM made to the 'Vette in the last 14 years compared to the NSX? etc. etc.

3) Anyone that says that Porsche has put out the same car year after year is as ignorant about Porsche as many Porsche guys are about the NSX (see 1 above). This applies to other cars as well.

4) LSD: The NSX has a friction plate LSD. As with most plate LSD, they wear out and need periodic rebuilding. I would hazard to guess that many NSX drivers are tooling around with worn LSD's which are running full open, all the while claiming how superior they are and not even knowing the difference. An LSD will not make a slow driver fast or turn a slow car into a fast one. An LSD on a RWD car will not cut your lap times by 20 seconds; if you suck, you will still suck with an LSD. An LSD's contribution to lap times is measured in tenths and fractions of second. It is NOT the miracle mechanism that makes a car great. Anyone that claims this is full of it or sensationalising for a magazine article. A professional racecar driver has the right to bitch about needing an LSD. Most people on this board, including myself, do not.

the lifetime of the 911 and the subsequent evolutions is all about incremental change, and refinement.

How do you get good at something? Practice. If a person were working to master guitar, and they were getting pretty good at it, should they then put down guitar and start piano?

I applaud Porsche for sticking to what they know, and constantly making it better.

Fact is the 911 of today is ENTIRELY different from the 911 of 20 yrs ago. They share a "resemblence", but they are no where near the "same". Dimensionally, and mechanically the cars are completely dissimilar.

I find it ironic that Porsche gets knocked for sticking to the same formula, while Honda gets knocked for altering theirs with the ASCC- It serves to prove that there is no way to please everyone.

911 is high on my wish list. Amazing car, and they keep getting better.

To tell you the truth I can't see the whole engine but I know the NSX engine is not very big not to mention 400cc's smaller.
