90K Service...Engine needs to be dropped?

Hi everyone, I'm bringing my nsx into the dealer soon to get the service done, belts, water pump, valve adjustment.

Do they need to drop the engine to do this?

The reason I ask is I've been advised to get them to install aftermarket headers as it would be simple if the motor is dropped.

I've called the dealer up and they reckon they don't need to drop?

Michael.

No need to drop the motor for TB, WP and valve adjustment.

They will probably remove the passenger side mount and drop the engine a few inches, per the service manual for tb/wp..

This would be a good time to also replace the cooling system hoses - the big ones at a minimum, if not all 23 of them.

And the crankshaft pulley.

Thanks for the advice on the coolant hoses. My car has only done 45K miles.......does it still need the crank pulley to be done?

Well, you haven't mentioned the year of your car. If it's a late NSX (say a 2005) you could probably wait. If it's an earlier one from the early 90's, I'd recommend it.

The problem is that the rubber harmonic dampener on the inside can separate from the pulley, and then rub through the timing belt cover. This could happen as a function of time, not just mileage.

Another approach is to get one of TitaniumDave's parts that mounts over the timing belt cover, to alert you if and when this happens, before it's too late.

Unlike the coolant hoses, you can do this (replace the pulley and/or install TitaniumDave's part) at any time without huge savings by doing it at the same time as the timing belt. So if you want to wait on this till later, you can.

Ken, I read your thread about the harmonic balancer/crankshaft pulley failure and was wondering why it is not part of the NSX maintenance schedule (unless it's there and I'm not seeing it)?

Anyway, I just had my 90k services done and did not think to have this part replaced. But I plan to go back to SOS next week and have the Cedar Ridge Crankshaft Damper Pulley Shield installed on my 97 NSX with 37.5k miles.

Is there anything else that you would recommend I should consider? This is what I had done this week: http://www.nsxprime.com/forum/showthread.php?t=161951

Thanks!

It's not there. Why not? I'm sure that at the time the car was designed and those maintenance recommendations developed, no one realized that the pulley could come apart and destroy the engine.

Maintenance schedules are not perfect. I think there are more egregious omissions in the NSX schedule. For example, there is no specified interval for replacing the cooling system hoses; it merely says to inspect them. Unfortunately, you probably won't spot anything until one splits and leaves you stranded somewhere - and avoiding such an occurrence is the whole reason for preventive maintenance. Another imprecision is the recommendation to flush the coolant (ignoring time intervals for the moment) at 45K, 75K, 105K, etc, although the water pump is normally replaced at the same time as the timing belt (e.g. at 90K) and the coolant is flushed at that time, thereby resetting the interval for flushing the coolant.

The only other thing I can think of is other items in the maintenance schedule, like transmission oil (which may be part of their 90K package, I don't know) and things that are specified for intervals other than 90K, like spark plugs, unless they were already done (knowing you, I'm guessing they were).
