Hello all,
I'm starting to do some research on doing an "overlay" type aux input connector on the NSX. This is for connecting my Garmin 660 GPS to the NSX sound system. The Garmin also has hands-free bluetooth that I use with my mobile phone. If I want the sound to come from the speakers in the car for navigation voice prompts and cell phone calls, it can't be just when I've tuned the head unit to an aux input as would be the case with the other aux inputs that have been discussed here. The Garmin is also an MP3 player, so I would use the setup for music also.
Instead, I need to wire in the sound output from the Garmin to the factory sound system at a point where the signal coming from the Garmin is overlaid whatever other audio signal is going to the speakers.
I did something similar to this in my Volvo XC90. That system is entirely fiber-optic and no commercial aux input adapters existed for the car until just recently (and they cost $500!). The only solution was to poke around the circuit board of the factory amp and solder connections directly to the amplifier. Here is a link to a thread about that:
//http://www.volvo-forums.com/index.php?showtopic=1497&hl=aux+input
The result worked perfectly and was really BETTER than an aux input that had to be "tuned" into from the head unit.
Now I want to do the same thing on my NSX. Looking at the pin-out from the cable to the head-unit, and knowing that all the amplifiers are in the speakers, this seems like it will be 10x easier in the NSX than the Volvo. My plan is to wire the headphone jack of the Garmin to the appropriate connector pins on the head unit using a 680 ohm resister and 1 uF capaciter on the signal leads for isolation. Before I proceed, I was hoping that one of the NSX electronics experts here could answer a few questions:
1. Does this sound like it would work? Are the audio output levels from the head unit in the same magnitude as headphone level audio signals? Are the inputs to the amp high impedance?
2. The labeling of the pin-outs are a little confusing. e.g Pin A7 is labeled "Foot well bass speaker (Driver's +)", and Pin A8 is labeled "Foot well bass speaker (Passenger's +)". Obviously there is no Driver's foot well speaker. So is this just an extra harness point for RHD versions, or is it maybe the Rear speaker.
3. There are no connectors for the Rear speaker. Is this driven from the other speakers?
4. Is power to the amps switched from the head unit (pin A6?), or do they come on with the car?
Thanks for your help. Of course I'll post pics and progress once I get this project under way.
