Another Momo wheel install thread

Yes yes I know there are several threads on aftermarket wheel installation and I have read most if not all of them but some of the pics are missing in a few (links went bad i guess) and I couldnt find a thread specifically about the NRG hub and quick release install.

I have the NSX manual so I understand how to get the panels off and disconnect the SRS cables and jumper the pins to disable the SRS light I just need to know how to install the NRG hub and quick release.

I read the following threads which were helpful but I didnt think they helped me with the NRG install or I just wasnt understanding correctly.

Can anyone who has installed the NRG hub and quick release give me a few tips and if possible show some pics of their install?

I plan on doing a write up with pics on everything so the next guy can follow my pictorial.

I've done 2 Momo steering wheel installs on 93 & 03 NSX using two different types of hubs. No quick release ones though. I can't imagine it would be that much different?? I would think it would be easier to install, because it's in two separate parts. I'll tell you that the horn install and connection took me the longest. (P.I.T.A) Everything else was easy.

When taking off OEM wheel, be careful not to strip Star T-screws. Also, be sure to get the hub retainer ring that holds horn assembly in place. Usually not included. One last thing, before you disconnect
battery, move your seat all the way back, or it will be tight down there.

Post some pics of both pieces of the hub.

I'll probably be doing a Quick release hub install in the next few weeks for 95 NSX. I can let you know then.

Don't strip the torx screws.

I also installed a Nrg quick release hub 2.0? I think about a year ago. The horn is the trickest part. If you don't need cruise control then I can help you out.

Basically when you take the oem steering wheel off you have two sets of yellow plugs. You don't need the smaller one if I remember correctly, just the larger one. The pin you need to connect to you nrg hub that attaches to the wheel is on the right side. Not the furthest to the right but the second furthest. You have to look at the yellow connector from the larger pinn grouping on your left. Here's a dumb diagram I---I--I that's what I remember correctly. After you've wired that to your hub you need to take that circle looking alum ring and attach a wire to the part that hangs in the middle. That's the "ground" for the horn I think. Just connect the ground and the wire you attached to that pinn to the horn to see if it sounds. If so then attach that stuff to the hub. Then the horn on the other side.

You put that alum ring inbetween I think the hub part between something. But I forget.

You'll also need to splice some wires since my kit gave me some off connectors.

How do the hub and quick release connect together?
 
The part on the left is going to be bolted onto the car when you remove the old steering stuff with i think a 17mm 6 point deep socket. Then the right part just snaps on. You also have a newer version than mine. You have the paddle release that's quicker. There's only one way the two snap together also.

I lied. The part on the right goes on first. Then the part on the left goes on. The part on the left also detaches which I think you have to do to install.


The part on the left is going to be bolted onto the car when you remove the old steering stuff with i think a 17mm 6 point deep socket. Then the right part just snaps on. You also have a newer version than mine. You have the paddle release that's quicker. There's only one way the two snap together also.

OK i think it would make sense if the quick release detached since I see no way to screw the quick release to the hub any other way.

EDIT: Duh......of course the quick release detaches into 2 parts since its function is to be able to remove the steering wheel for theft deterrance and ease of exit/entry........

yeah, the part on the right with the big rectangular/square hole goes on 1st and gets bolted on the steering column. The wider set yellow wire harness goes through that part. Looks like the other part with the yellow wire attached is your horn hook up. Just make sure you have good ground contact. Test horn before screwing anything on. That's definitely more simple than the other two installs (Non-quick release)

That is the 6 pin harness at the base of the steering column. Im talking about the yellow 3 pin and yellow 4 pin +1 black pin harness inside the steering wheel.

Good question. I was wondering about these 2 also. Do I just leave them unconnected??
 
The diagram that rtype posted didn't help me one bit. Leave the 3 pin connector alone, and you should have a connector with 5 pins I think. That connector has two groupings. One of 3 and 2. I already explained this. Connect the 4th one over from the left if your holding the connector like this
I---I--I connect that wire to the other part of the quick release then on the other side connect it to the horn. On the other side coming out from the horn that should be your grounding. Connect that to that alum ring that has the part sticking down in the middle. Call my cell if you got questions.
