how's that for an off-topic topic?

my wife and i have 19 fruit producing trees on our (suburban) property, from which we make many cases (last year, 45 cases) of jams and jellies, along with gallons of fruit liqueurs. the fruit we don't use - typically 2,000+ lbs - goes to second harvest to feed their program participants.

this year we're introducing bees to our property (and surrounding area) and i'm wondering if anybody on prime is a bee keeper.

anybody?

I am not a bee keeper but this problem is terrible. If I am not mistaken the problem is caused by chemicals used which confuse the bees migratory path. 90% of crops are dependant on bees. I don't know if the collapse colony theory is valid.

thx for this... the changing bee population and resulting impact on our hobby crops is actually what has motivated us to bring bees to our property. a close friend's father is a well known bee keeper and, though he doesn't rent out his bees, he does produce ~150 gallons of honey that he sells through www.carriersbees.com. (he's an amazing guy, btw)

thx again for the feedback.

Interesting. I'd like to order honey from you if you do get this going! :D

wow - thx for the interest :) i'll update our family & friends website / blog (www.twobigcats.com , www.twobigcats.blogspot.com ) as things progress and shoot you a note as appropriate.

(aside: when i ordered the bees, they asked me if i wanted them to put an identifying mark on the queen so we always know which one she is. initially i said no, but i think it might be kinda neat to keep an eye on her from time to time.)

oh, and we've picked a name for our Queen: Freddie
