I have to work in Germany in December and am contemplating going to Lisbon, Portugal for a long weekend since I am over there. Has anyone been there? Tips? Things to see, places to go, clubs, bars lounges etc?

Thanks,

Carl

I was there back in 1991 -- Similar story, working in Germany, wanted to flee the cold of winter, so I headed to Spain and Portugal.

My main memories of Lisbon --

*) I found a room in a guest house for just $7 a night. Sure, I had to share the room and the bathroom, but c'mon -- seven bucks!

*) I befriended a stoner who spoke better English than most every German I worked with. His English teacher? American movies. This lead to a personal theory of mine: People in countries that subtitle American movies speak much better English than people in countries that dub American movies. I don't think this has yet been disproven.

*) The people are generally laid back and very friendly. I had no trouble striking up conversations and generally palling around with the locals.

*) The city is extraordinarily beautiful. Bring your camera. It's simply spectacular; one of my favorites in Europe.

I started a cruise there in 1998. It was an awesome city. I stayed at the Four Seasons which was a great hotel( but when is it not). I just remember telling myself that I should of brought my golf clubs.I saw the Royal Palace and it was pretty cool.If you could make it I would try to go to Madeira this may not be possible with the time table but it is a cool place to see...

Thanks for the tips, sounds like a cool place with some laid back people. I always enjoy talking to locals when I travel. Usually you get the best tips from them, but I wanted some good places to start off with. The Royal Palace sounds good. So I will put that on the to do list, as for pictures in the world of digital I take my camera everywhere.

I am not a golfer, so I guess I can leave the clubs at home:).

It is a nice city, not too expensive, food is alright and hopefully it will not be "european" cold in December ;).

No specific tips to give (been there in 2003, probably bars&clubs changed in the meantime) but it won't be difficult to find the right places... ;)

Hi,

never found one on the floor... but one thing that happens quite frequently is
people leaving their cards on ATMs... once i was in the line on one ATM and
the guy in front of me left the card and the money and i told him to get them.
It was an very old guy and he was very thankfull that i helped him.

That wallet return stat maybe a little off... i mean... if i find a wallet and return it,
then when the owner go ask for it to the police or something, they may not know
about it unless they are at the same station i returned it.... i think there is no
digital data-base where they can search if the wallet was returned...
