Since the server move, did you notice the ads by google on the top of the page? I want to hop on that supercharger for $69.95 and add up to 35HP. Wait, I already have the CTSC. Damn, maybe next time.........

Id like to advertise there.... How much is it and who do I pay?

John - If by "since the server move" you mean "since about 15 minutes ago" then sure. I just set up the ads a few minutes ago to test them out.

I've been talking to some other site owners and checking out some other car sites and Google ads seem to work well for many of them so I thought I'd give it a try. The biggest problem with using it on an NSX site will be lack of NSX vendors advertising through google. I am trying to fine tune it to see if it can deliver relevant ads. I am adding all the "snakeoil" products to a list that will block their ads on this site.

We'll see how it goes for a week or so. If it ends up full of annoying ads that are not very relevant to NSX owners I'll probably drop it. If I can get it so it delivers relevant ads we may keep it.

I just saw these and was coming to this forum to post & see we already have a discussion under way!
Lud, let me pre-empt by saying I completely respect (& encourage!) your right to earn some revenue with the banner ads: however, I'm not sure I can condone seeing ads for "turbonator" & "$69.95 Superchargers" - being listed here almost lends some credence to these products, which I'm sure you would agree are totally worthless?
Again, applaud you for the concept - not crazy about the quality of the advertisers.

Edit: as I re-read your post, Lud, looks like you already have plans to block the "snake-oil" junk - good for you!

The ads for turbonator and spiralmax were the first two added to the block list. It takes a few hours for block list changes to take effect according to google's documentation. We'll see how it goes. If there is too much junk advertising I'll just ditch it.

Food for thought

Have you considered NSX For Sale and Parts for Sale premium listings? It could be as simple as making a thread a sticky for a certain period of time, but might also include other value add features.

Google ads can make you pretty good money. I think it is a smart move to have them. I don't think they will become annoying. They are just text.

The ads are interesting. It seems to tailor the ads to the content of the page you are viewing! I read a thread about computer problems and the ads were tailored for that. I read the Forced Induction forum and the ads were for superchargers. I read a thread about car covers and all the ads were for car covers. Wild!

Hi

Let's see what ads pops up if we discuss the trail of Michael Jackson

Regards

I have blocked all the ads for "questionable" products I've found so far. But since the ads depend on the content of the page you are viewing I am sure there are hundreds if not thousands I have not seen yet. Please report any suspect ads here. I need to know the URL the ad takes you to (.e.g "spiralmax.com") because that is how I block them.

I noticed the google ads instantly because i block gif/swf adverts AGGRESSIVELY. I don't mind text ads though.

I got an advert to www.swimwear.com but i don't think most guys will complain. :p :D :D :D (just kidding)

Please put me on the list of people who do NOT like these random ads. The text colors also don't match with Prime's colors and it gets annoying to look at. Do they provide more income to Prime than sponsers ads?

Also, is there anyway to change the colors that Prime dispays in on my screen? I'd like to try black to match my NSX.

although i really don't like the ads - we're bombarded by them everywhere we go - i think they're a good thing for prime members in that they provide lud with a financial return for his many years of work in creating and maintaining prime... the best place to be if you're an nsx owner.

If the ads keep Prime free and functional, then i have no problem with them -- even if they start using David Hasslehoff to sell goods. :D

(lol... i bet some poor person clicked on that link only to regret it. :D :D :D )

I have seen other BBS systems where unregistered users get more adds then the registered folks. The unregistered folks sometimes outnumber the registered ones and take up a lot of bandwidth, resources, etc - and this is a way to recoup some of the "non-community" expenses.

They don't really bother me but I don't ever click on them either as they are so prevalent that I tend to "tune them out". JMO.

There is some level of customization I can do to the ads and I think I can adjust the colors. I'll take a look at making it match the rest of the site's color scheme when I have some free time.

Yes, it is paying more than the sponsor ads. Particularly since a couple of the sponsors were, shall we say, not very good about paying.

If anyone wants to build a .css with different color schemes I can add it to the list and then people can pick their color scheme in their profile. You can get the details at either vbulletin.com or vbulletin.org

Interesting idea. Do you know anyone doing this with vBulletin? I'm not sure I know how to accomplish that offhand but if you can point me to someone doing it w/ the same forum software I'll investigate it further.

As an example - go to the forums at www.slickdeals.net as they are doing this and appear to have the same software that Prime uses.

If you don't have an account they actually place the add words in-line with the posts so you have to see them as you scroll down. It even says to register to remove the adds. Once you register - the addwords go away completely.

That is really all I know as you are way ahead of me in setup and customizing the BBS stuff.
