I've got a 91 auto- stock, except for a custom intake that sucks air directly through the driver vent--- anyhow, is it normal for these cars to NOT spin the tires off launch? the car seems to run just fine and really picks up speed after I hit about 4 thousand R's..... I know it's probably normal.. but I'm getting sick of getting killed off the line by stock mustangs and Camaros.. arghhhhh

I hate to belabor the obvious, but it never hurts to double-check... Did you try turning off the traction control system using the button on the dash?

You shouldn't be spinning the tires with traction control enabled. I assume TCS works the same on automatics.

Nothing personal, but you probably bought the wrong car for drag racing.

I agree, essentialy you have a 3100lb car with a 3.0 liter 250 hp motor ,auto, not a great recipe for smoky burnouts, can be done but not without stressing the system.I'm sure some other auto owners may be able to give you thier experience.

As afroementioned, you probably need to turn the TCS off. To do a good burn out with an automatic you need to do a brake stand at first. In english, that means you need to be on the brakes while giving it gas, and then when you feel the car want to move you need to slowly let off the brake while giving it more gas. This will in turn allow the wheels to spin while the car stay relatively motionless. This was the method I used in high school when I had a Mercury Zephyr wagon with a 351.

Replace Mercury Zephyr wagon with IROC and 351 with 305, and you have my story. Ahh - high school.

If you're looking to beat people off the line during a drag race, you don't want the tires to spin. That's why drag racers buy sticky tires. Be glad your car gets a good bite off the line.

I don't drag the car- I'd just like to be able to put it down and make the tires squeek a little, thats all- my 94 TransAm I just sold could with no troubles.. I Know it's not a V8-- But c-mon.. I think it should be able to spin a little... even If I do a brake stand, it won't!!!! even I feather the brake off a little.. It's very aggrivating- and Yes I've turned TCS off--

Picture my aggression: Friday night, Red light, Camaro to the left 71 Chevelle to the right and me in the middle-- Of course, It's not like I'm on some old muscle car junk- but light turns green, I floor it, and nothing really happens until I hit 4000.. then it's Gone.. but by that time, I'm left in smoke and rock and flying road debris- I eventually will catch up, but DAMN, It would sure be nice if I had a little tire chirp.. Is a S/C my only problem solver???? arghhhhhhhhhh

and I know I know what your thinking, "what is this guy on? If this idiot wanted to burn out all the time- why did he buy an NSX"... I know it's just a V6 and I'd NEVER go back to american built muscle.. but.. yeah-- I DO LOVE my car- more than ANY CAR, I've ever owned.. .. Just not sure if something is wrong or if this is just the way things are with the auto NSX's... The car pulls fine once I get up on the RPM'S.. but the Bog really doesn't do it for me. what's wrong? maybe I need to move away from my red neck villiage.. .LOL

I will be in the market for another auto NSX in a couple of years. What number NSX do you have? It's a rare car in Canada.

I have never spun the tires.

Unfortunately, the NSX doesn't have the torque that the TA has. Strike one.

I thought you stated above that you don't drag the car. The NSX isn't made for drag racing. It's an exotic that performs it's best on a road course or in the twisties. I'd like to see where that Camaro and Chevelle would have ended up if you were on a nice mountian road. You got you a$$ handed to you because your car was slower and it's not a drag car. Strike two.

You said it all right there. Strike three. You're outta here!!! I'm obviously being sarcastic, but in all practicality you are trying to do things with your NSX that just aren't possible. With only ~190ft/lb torque you're not going to spin anything with an auto tranny in a mid-engine car. Maybe if you had bald 14inch tires on the back you'd be able to smoke'em. It sounds like you needed to buy a manual transmission car.

Also, how do you not know what number your car is? The VIN is stamped all over the place and the last five digits indicate which number car you own.

Btw, congratulations on your new car. Now go out an pick on some Ford Escorts and Chevy Chevette's.

OMG OMG.. :frown: Ok Ok.. your getting the total wrong impression of what I was getting at.. .. If I had a choice, I would have purchased a manual.. but for $26k canadian $$ I wasn't about to pass the deal up..I love the auto actually- and it's not like I WANT to sit there and burn up my $$$ rubbe.. I guess I just miss the torque of the V8's off the line.. BTW- Thats THE ONLY thing I miss.. the handling, and high end speed make up for it... I'm new to the whole NSX world and still learning.. so on that note- be easy on me  production number is 00216.. how was I to know that unless someone told me

Nope, wrong question.

Why did you buy an automatic?

Longer gears, no clutch control, hi revving motor != burnout

(geek alert: '!=' is the "not equal" operator in some programming languages)

You know, I've driven two autos and while neither was exceptionally fast from a dead stop, they didn't "bog" either. Is your car actually "bogging" down or is it just relatively slow compared to other cars you've driven? Maybe you need a tuneup or something.

I check the market almost every day and I have not seen an NSX for 26k. That is a low price even for the miles.

So you have VIN JH4NA126XMT800216. Thanks any info on the cars out there is good to know.

The TC has engaged once or twice but that was driving in the rain or on bald tires. Don't ever drive on bald tires in the rain.

The most fun from a start is when the turning at a large intersection. The car is very fast. Remember a mid engine wants to spin so don't let go of the throttle abruptly.

Wow, that motor looks SO inviting!!! :) Jeez.. look at that radiator hose.. no wonder cars like this are problematic.. who designs a 6 foot radiator hose?!?! They should've just made a pipe with couplers.

Why does everyone cringe at the thought of bald tires and traction control? People need to practice more car control. Bald tires do not cause accidents, bad drivers do. I've had plenty of bald tires that I practiced sliding with. If you depend solely on things like good tires and traction control, then you really dont know how to handle your car and should further practice car control.

I am not advocating that bald tires are good, yes.. they need to be changed. But just because a tire hits the wear bars doesnt mean its time for an immediate change; you can still have some fun with them before they are toast. I just would be extra careful in the rain and would also avoid high speed maneuvering.

Also try this:

1. Place the car in neutral and turn off tcs
2. Floor the gas and keep it there (note the RPM is at redline bouncing off the limiter)
3. Knock the selector into drive.
4. Hang on
5. Make sure you have lots of money in your bank account for repairs.

oh yes-- it's been done, my buddy's first car his parents bought him was an old Dodge OMNI- they told him that they wouldn't let him get another car until this one died-- it took 5 tranny drops
