When I lived in Europe I had an office in Cairo. I was there at least once per month. I enjoyed being there. Nice people, very crowded, interesting food, don't even think about driving...
I went for a few weeks back in 99. Enjoyed it very much other than the air travel (IE we leave when we say we leave and not before) and the car travel (IE we don't use our lights ever and every intersection is a big game of chicken).
Cairo was nice. I think the Egyptian Museum is one of the best in the world for content.
Pyramids were awesome to see. Luxor was very nice as well.
The Mosque of Muhammad Ali in Cairo is great as well.
So much to see and do as long as you don't mind typical 3rd world conditions in many areas.
I just got back from a cruise and we stopped there. Pyramids were great as well as the Sphinx and a huge mosque that was awesome. The people there were very pushy though and made it uncomfortable to go anywhere. In addition it is a litle, scary when every bus had it's own security guard with a submachine gun in plain view and a police escort everywhere we went. I didn't know whether to feel very secure or very scared. Otherwise the place was nice but very dirty. This was in Alexandria and Cairo.
I've only been to Abu Dabab scuba-diving and partying.. I wasn't realy interested in culture. Don't get scared by people not looking like police or military stroll around the airport with AK47s on the back.
Oberoi Mena House in Cairo (book a room that looks out on the pyramids)
I worked for the Government of Abu Dhabi at the time and they own a large portion of the InterContential Hotel chain. Consequently I would stay at the InterContential in Cairo. Great memories of sitting on my terrace on the 35th or 40th floor at call to prayer, the sunset in Cairo and overlook the Nile.
