Anyone here getting a Rivian?

So my next daily is between the R1T, Lightning, and R1S. I have all 3 on reservation. After viewing all 3, I think the R1S is the happy medium best all arounder for me. I'm keeping my Tacoma with the truck bed so this kind of made the R1T redundant. I also think the R1T is too long for my commute and parking requirements here in LA. For a full size truck, the Lightning is very impressive, but it's just too big to drive around for me as a daily.

Note, one of the clever things about the R1T is the way the tailgate opens. It's on a gooseneck so effectively it becomes an 8ft flat bed when open. I know what mean about needing a bigger bed but the Rivians have a bunch of clever things incorporated.

My neighbor just received his blue Lightning. It’s an all in one truck. Another person down the street has been driving the Riviant pick up with manufacturers plate, looks very interesting in person.

rivian is in a critical phase now.....they over promised to amazon now have to trim white collar force up to 10%......this is when the C suite earns its keep..

I have had my new F-150 Powerboost hybrid for 3 weeks now. It's simply amazing. Hybrid tech is seamless and almost 1/4 of my miles have been on EV mode only. Also, I'm pretty sure it will do 0-60 faster than my NSX. :) I have the supercrew with the big bed (6.5ft), but that's Colorado livin'. It's actually a small truck for my neighborhood LOL. Ford also stepped up their game on the interior and luxury factor. If you can fit it, you'll love the lightning. I only got the hybrid b/c I have to tow our camper. Otherwise, I would have gone Lightning.

I have been a tiny bit obsessive about Rivians. Unfortunately, I get this way with cars i'm interested in. The Rivian is the most overbuilt vehicle i'm currently aware of.

Munro Live on youtube deconstructs many vehicles. They have a R1T getting broken now into individual nuts and bolts. Everything is so overbuilt... it's actually a great deal for the consumer. You're getting a lot of car for the money. They really need to learn to value engineer over there. They threw the kitchen sink at this thing engineering and design wise. It's to the benefit of the consumer but detriment to the P&L surely.

I see pretty easy ways to reduce costs and complexity incrementally going forward. They're in a sketchy place though. They could easily go BK any year now. Last I checked they still had some healthy cash (in the billions) for a rainy day. Let's wait and see.

For now... I think this is easily a $150,000-200k vehicle from a value standpoint. It's better than the Aston Martin DBX which sells for $200K+ IMO.

Anyway... i'm a fan and hope they stick around. I don't want to be stuck with the next DeLorean!

Not a Rivian, but I just put down the reservation deposit for a Cadillac Lyriq. Not sure I need / want that large a truck for commuting, but I like the features, esp the auto drive. I’m also thinking Genesis GV60, which is smaller and the same platform as the Ionic, but I think no way as ugly.

I'm supposed to get my R1T soon. My build has been confirmed for over a month and my estimate was originally in Dec 2022 but it's been mostly radio silence the past few weeks. My guide told me it was in production and I'd get to the next step as soon as it was complete. I'm stoked about it though! I haven't had a truck since ~2009 when I sold my Tacoma due to ridiculous gas prices...

I have several gripes and complaints about this vehicle but vehicle dynamics (i.e. throttle calibration, suspension, etc) is just incredibly good especially considering it's 7100lbs. It's unreal in that department. Most of my complaints and annoyances are in software which I hope will be addressed over time. I can go through those gripes if anybody cares. The mediocre Autopilot and the lack of Android Auto might cause me to sell this thing tbh.

Here are some photos! p.s. on Day 3 I also used it to move offices!

Still waiting on the accesories to come in the mail. I've ordered the bike rack and a few other Rivian goodies.

One of the big surprises... I thought this gear tunnel would be a total GIMICK. I use it ALL THE TIME. It has so many compartments, nooks and crannies to put large or small items. I have a R1S also on pre-order but i'm debating giving it up because the R1T seems to be the more practical choice. We will see...

Congrats on the purchase! The car is said to be gorgeous! Looking forward to reading your post about some experience having a car of this brand.

@RYU These are beginning to trickle out to my little midwestern town and I got to drive a friends R1T. He agreed with Car and Drivers assessment that the R1S is a driving dynamics mess compared to the R1T.

@Mac Attack I'm friends with one of the test drivers for them. We've had lots of "confidential" talks. Feel free to DM me if you're serious about either one of these. I can provide some insight and what it's looking like going forward. Otherwise, yes... overall the T had a much larger R&D budget than the S. Makes sense from a business standpoint, but that left the S as basically a copy/paste exercise and inevitably some to be desired.

However, from a purely handling standpoing, I can attest the T is simply UNREAL. It is so so so good. It's the most versatile suspension setup I've ever experienced and it's good as a sportscar, or a 4x4, or a Cadillac cruiser. The truck has it's flaws but driving dynamics is unbelievably good for what it is. I've said this many times.. a truck has no business handling this good.

lets hope Rivian can stay solvent...

Being taken private would be a tall order for any PE, VC group...maybe a big player like stellantis...

Agree. It would have to be a big player who wants to buy their way ahead into the EV space. Stellantis has Jeep that would pair well but the Rivian feels more like a Range Rover product. VW has the cash and they could use the Rivian brand equity right now. All the VW products except Porsche, sucks from a branding perspective.

@RYU - selling the T? I finally picked up my R1T two weeks ago and I'd agree with your comments re: driving dynamics. The "magic" didn't really shine through when I test drove an R1T but hoping your experience will be better!

@RYU Ah, since you sold it already then I'll be a bit more forthcoming... The current Rivian offerings just aren't for us. If you're looking for a midsize electric SUV did you drive the iX? I really like the fully loaded iX 50's but my wife and I just can't get over the ugly kidney grill and I've been told that I can't wrap it due to sensor interference and screwing up that gimmicky self-healing material.

I find as we get older it's nice to have one phone app, learn and know one MMI interface, and generally know all of the hieroglyphics for one brand instead of 3, 4, or 5 brands. We've made Audi's our preferred brand now and in the near future.

My wife has had an eTron sportback since they came out in 2020, and years ago a RS eTron GT replaced my NC1. We've had zero mechanical issues with the two and our only negatives so far have been occasional phone app glitches. With my retirement and trying to reduce the fleet, I've been going back and forth between getting the mildly refreshed eTron or the BMW iX to replace both of our current Audi's. I would replace them with the eTron A6 Avant but their new electric platform has apparently been set back with software development issues and it'll probably be 1.5 years before available.

I guess to sum it up, what do you think about the iX and how it compares to the R1S? I remember you had an i3 awhile ago and seemed to like it.
