In your area, you won't see any difference in the two :P "w" means the oil viscosity in "Winter" conditions (ie: cold weather) :) Both are still 30 weight otherwise.

You know the recommended oil is 10w-30, right?

I'm not saying 5/0 won't work fine, but what's the harm in changing it with the right stuff. At least for M1 at walmart, it is all the same price.

0w30 ---> Civic hybrid
10w30 --> NSX

The Civic's use 0W30, 5W20 or other lower weight viscosity for better gas mileage. That 1, 2, 3 mpg makes a difference.

With today's high quality syntehtics, that don't shear if replaced at hte right intervals, and the right conditions, there isn't an loss in going to 0W, or 5Wx.

I've done oil analysis and it has confirmed that. The biggest reason that Honda recommends 10W-30 is because with non-synthetic, after 7500 miles that oil may veyr well have sheared to 0W-20!

.. If you want to determine the "best" oil to use for your application, do a oil sample. Blackstone is $20.00. Go do it.

Or you can just follow the factory specifications and call it a day. Why even consider going to a weight like that, unless you got a killer deal on it?

Found this on another site:

just remember guys when buying synthetics check the back of the bottle. an oil with the a High Temperature High Shear # greater than 3.5 is considered an A3 oil.

ACEA A1/B1 Oil intended for use in gasoline and car + light van diesel engines specifically designed to be capable of using low friction low viscosity oils with a High temperature / High shear rate viscosity of 2.6 to 3.5 mPa.s. These oils may be unsuitable for use in some engines. Consult owner manual or handbook if in doubt.

ACEA A3/B3
Stable, stay-in-grade oil intended for use in high performance gasoline and car + light van diesel engines and/or for extended drain intervals where specified by the engine manufacturer, and/or for year-round use of low viscosity oils, and/or for severe operating conditions as defined by the engine manufacturer.

ACEA A3 oils (good):

Amsoil 3000
5w30

Amsoil European Formula
5w40

BMW HP Synthetic:
5w-30,

Castrol Syntec:
0w-30
15w-50

Mobil 1:
0w-40

Motul 8100
5w40

Motul 6100
15w50
10w40

Royal Purple
5w40

ACEA A1 oils (okay, but not up to the task):

Castrol Syntec:
5w-30
10w-30

Mobil1:
0w-30
5w-30
10w-30

My question is why would anyone use anything other than Amsoil? 5W30 or 10W30 are both fine. I also use Auto Rx religiously and have been since Charlotte had 70K miles on her. She is now approaching 230K. OIl and filter are changed every 3 to 5 thousand miles.
