Approved Rim Width?

Hey guys,

Just wondering if someone might have some input for me - I am putting some new rubber on the rear of my NSX, it has the newer (96+?) rims, but it's a 1992. My question is in regard to approved rim width, the tires measure 9.5", but I'm not certain that I'm measuring the right area of the wheel (although im fairly certain...). I'll have to go with Kumho:frown: since that's what's on the front, and I don't have the spare change to upgrade all 4 to a better compound... do you think a 275 series(275/40/ZR17) will fit on the 9.5" rim? Both of the links below show it will, but I wanted some first hand experiance from some others...

PS. as stated above, I know I'm doing the wrong thing with wrapping the wheels in Kumho Supra's, but I have no other choice, since I have to stay with the same rubber on front as back, at this time:wink: I'm looking for a more aggressive look with a wider tire

On the inside of the rim it reads 17x8.5JJ60, does this mean my rim is indeed 8.5", and not the 9.5" I had measured?

The seven-spoke rear rims from '94-01 are indeed 17x8.5. The rim width is measured from the bead (where the inside edge of the tire is mounted), and is not the outer dimension of the wheel, which is probably what you measured.

If your front tires are 205/45-16, then get 245/40-17 rear tires. If your front tires are 215/45-16, then you can get either 245/40-17 or 255/40-17 rears.

Do some drifting or take some long trips; do whatever you need to, to use those crappy Kumho 712s up as soon as you can! (Even the budget tire that Kumho replaced the 712 with, the SPT, is much better in every way than those old horrible 712s...)

Agreed! I think I'm set on the GS-D3 after all...this tire looks unstoppable, as sometimes I get stuck in rain :frown:

Would it be a bad idea to put some GS-D3s on the back and leave the Kumoh 712s upfront until I burn them off? I lost a rear tire yesterday, and I don't know if I should dump money into all 4, the back were almost gone, but it looks like the 712s upfront have 6000-9000 still left on them

Would the car become very unstable with two tread compounds different? It's just a shame to ditch the fronts when they still have some life ...

How about 215/40/ZR16 front, 275/40/ZR17 rear? Would the 255/40/ZR17s provide better beformance than the wider 275? I really like the look, but what would I be sacrificing with the 275s over the 255s? dilemas...

Opinions?

Hmm, looks like these are my choices, theyre listed as Eagle F1s, but not under the GS-D3 catagory, is there huge differences? The ratings seem to be the same...

Rear:
255/40ZR17 94Y VSB 8.5 - 10.0 9.00 10.2 25.1 8.7 1,477 @ 51

Front:
215/40ZR16 86W VSB 7.0 - 8.5 7.50 8.6 22.8 7.3 1,163 @ 50

Both stay within my 8.5" Rim Width, and are the glorified Eagle F1s

Opinions???

Yes, very bad idea. Having front tires that grip poorly, and rear tires that grip well, is a prescription for disaster. The car will understeer (plow ahead when you turn the wheel), and it will feel terrible.

Just toss the front tires after they're dismounted, or sell them on eBay. They're really not worth very much at all. They're lousy tires, and they're worn, too.

How about 215/40/ZR16 front, 275/40/ZR17 rear?
215/40-16 front is too small. 275/40-17 rear is too large.

Would the 255/40/ZR17s provide better beformance than the wider 275?
Better handling and better acceleration.

I really like the look, but what would I be sacrificing with the 275s over the 255s?
The TCS, for one thing. Acceleration, for another. Not a good idea.

I think the F1 GS-D3 in 205/45-16 and 245/40-17 is a great combination. Buy them by Saturday and you can get a $50 cash card (rebate) from Goodyear.

I ordered the GS-D3s, F:205/45/ZR16, R:255/40/ZR17, I hope I'm happy, thanks for the super input nsxtasy!

I said to get the 245/40 rears with the 205/45 fronts, not the 255. It won't be terrible on your '92, but the handling would be a bit crisper with the 245. If it's still possible to change the order, I would.

Note that this combination - 205/45-16 and 255/40-17 - could cause TCS problems on a '94-01 NSX, particularly when you replace the rear tires so that the fronts are more worn than the rear, but the TCS should not be a problem on a '91-93 or an '02-05.
