The company I work for owns a multitude of car dealerships including an Acura store here in my home town.
I'm looking at having some work done on the car so I called them today and asked if they had a master NSX tech on staff because I didn't want just any tech working on it. At first it sounded as if they were a bit offended that I demanded to have a qualified NSX tech working on my car. Then they come back and tell me they have two of them employed there. Quite honestly, I'm a bit skeptical of that but I took them at their word.
I then asked what the employee labor rate was and got quoted $125 hr. After hearing that I really wonder what the non employee rate is.
The dealership I work at (FMC) charges ~$100 hr. I guess they figure if you can afford an Acura brand product they can squeeze a few more $$ out of you at the checkout stand.
So, that leads me to my question. I realize that different parts of the country and markets will probably have different rates but I was curious what others had paid to work done either at the dealership or independent location.
At this point I might just have decide whether it is more cost effective to have the work done locally or drive 2hrs South to a trusted friend to do the work. It is just a bit of a hassle to get the car down there but it might come to that.

A "trusted friend" to do the work seems preferable. Whatcha waitin' for? An invite? Schedule and go see this friend! Make his time worthwhile.

You've been on here a looong time.

You are fortunate.

I doubt they have 2 NSX mechs

its hard to find a dealer with just one.

My NSX mech has worked on them his whole life

when the NSX came out in 91 each dealership could train 1-2 employees paid by honda of america I think, to be certified by honda. most of the guys looked at the car and said no-way but my NSX mech said hell why not I'll do it. been doing it every since.

The Chicago area is probably about average for cost of living - a bit cheaper than much of the two coasts, a bit more expensive than smaller markets in the middle of the country. Most dealerships in this area charge $110-130 as their standard hourly rate. Independents generally charge $80-110.

I got to know the local guy (the one) and he hooks me up on the side so I don't get taken at the stealer.

Not Acura but I was just quoted $125/hr to have my water pump changed on my '07 Porsche Cayman at the Porsche dealership here in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. I was also quoted $2200 to have my water pump & timing belt changed on my NSX as well as having the valves adjusted. That includes all parts & labor.
