Baggage rack over the engine window/cover, how to make one

Last year I went to LeMans in the NSX, it was great! Raced lots of very cool cars on the way down there, the 4 hour trip down there is like car Mecca. Imagine smiling for 4 hours, jaw starts to hurt.
anyway, this year I’m leaving the amateur ranks and joining the “pros” and bringing an inflatable swimming pool and my bicycle.

I want to put the bike on a sort of aluminium frame along with maybe the BBQ, cooler, awning etc etc. well, ok the cooler can go in the passenger foot-well.

Does anyone have experience on connecting the frame to the car? I imagine it will be above the glass window over the engine and connect to the trunk under the wing.

I’ll weld one up from alu tubing etc.

Any ideas?
Peter

BTW, this is not a joke, I’m serious! It’s hot there and I need a swimming pool to be cool (cool in both ways) and a bike to survive the 4 days of walking.

yes, search: I found that link too, but I will be lying the bike down (remove a pedal) and strapping the pool and other stuff actually on the bike so I need to see some mounting points because I’m going to make it myself.
From what I found on the search, the trunk rim is strong enough.

But do the mounts at the top of the glass hurt the little plastic and rubber strip? And how tight can I clamp the glass?

Please post some pictures when you get it ready for the road. I have GOT to see this.

Are you taking a passenger? If not, can't the pool fit in the passenger seat area?

If I were taking a passenger, I'd put the pool in the trunk with the lid open and store the bicycle partially disassembled behind the seats.

If I weren't taking a passenger, I'd remove the passenger seat and door panel then go from there.

Many other options exist, like: The bike could also be strapped to the roof on top of a hard pad over a soft pad and using duct tape to seal the front edge. Or, you could install a trailer hitch and tow a small trailer, or install a bike rack on the trailer hitch, or put a light duty carrier on the hitch,...

I'm curious, how are you going to fill the pool?

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I’ll search for the Car and Driver article.

No passenger unless he wants to hang onto the roof!

That’s part of the problem, I need to cram a really long hose into the car amongst other things.
Last year I had the car absolutely FULL, I could barely move. When I opened the door, bottles of drink and chips fell out! There was the cooler, tent, some clothes, lots of steaks since that was my job with the guys, inflatable mattress since the ground is really rough, shovel to dig a cooler in a hole in the ground, lots of snacks and lots to drink, Hibachi, BBQ coals with implements of destruction etc.
It just wouldn’t all fit, I had to leave the generator with refrigerator at home. The guys weren’t happy about that.

So I figured the tent, pool, and hose could be strapped to the bike which in turn is strapped down somehow to my frame I need to make. I’m too tall to put it behind the seats, it’s my old mountain bike with a big chain for locking, it takes space too.

I like your idea about the mattress on the roof. Dual purpose, I can sleep on it too!

Yeah, I saw that, very cool. The problem with a trailer is its like the Cannonball Run down there, first there’s the motorway part 100mph for a long way. Here in Europe you have to drive slow with a trailer, there is a low speed limit, and about 70mph is the max you can do for safety, but generally a car with no trailer can haul ass. Which we do.
So a trailer is out. Then I may as well take the van.
The four and a half French police specially sent to that area between Calais, Rouen and LeMans (a 3 hour drive) for the weekend are so completely overwhelmed by the shear numbers of hot cars driving down there, so we can get away with anything. I think those four guys must enjoy it too. It’s a site to see.
Then there is the second half, on “National Routes”, single lanes with opposing traffic in a single lane (two lane total) and the constant passing, which we all do many times in the 2-3 hours but traffic is heavy in the other direction too, and some of them are trying to pass. So nimble is the keyword there.
Into a million traffic circles 2 abreast trying to show that pesky Elise blocking me that he is not faster around a round-about, you get the idea…
Last year I fell in for a while with a brand new Lambo, a couple of new Ferraris, multiple Elises, a couple of TVRs, 911s, and a Nobel. Until we all turned off different wrong ways and got lost because we were not watching the map…
I went round the corner into a Paege and found about 30 Elises with Ferraris, Astons everything was there, all trying to get through the tolls, insane.

Unfortunately a trailer is out if I want to have fun. There is a LOT of really tight passing. Some are the nice cars are even coming the wrong way up one-way streets in the towns because they are lost. Or maybe it was me. It’s chaos.

The trip down there is, to me and many people, almost nicer that the event itself. It’s that insane. So if I have all my junk strapped to the roof of my NSX, fine. Fits with the event and is worth a few photos. I just don’t want to scratch my car with the bike or rack or whatever.
Crash my car, ok, but no scratches from the rack or bicycle. Or Hibachi.

So I want to make a good rack that will hold together through the rigors of the race down there. Clamping onto the glass won’t make me feel good tho. Gotta figure out how a way to fasten that thing down!

Maybe you need a different bike instead for tooling around that would fit inside the car? Search on folding bike on Google for options near you.

Here is one:

Might be safer and in the end cheaper then rack + damage to your ride.

yes, I’m definitely going to consider one of those. Hell of a lot easier.

You mention you are not interested in a trailer because it is your intent to speed, but wouldn't your ability to do so also be effected by some kind of self-made baggage rack? Unless you are willing to go 100mph while shedding your cooler, pool, generator, etc. ;)
