anybody in here from the bend area? my bride and i are considering relocating and bend is often suggested to us as a possible alternative.

I've only driven through Bend to head over to the coast to check out Coos Bay. Coos Bay is BEAUTIFUL, probably the most gorgeous place I've ever been to, love the coves there. You'll be lucky to be so close.

However on the negative side, but just about Coos Bay. I'm told that it's over run with racist rednecks. I've never ran across em, but then again I wasn't there to stay, just spend a little time and money.

But hey! It's Oregon, they pump the gas FOR YOU :) Thats incentive itself!

Bend is an up and coming area. Very out-doors/sporting type of town. Oh and my favorite brewery is there. Deschuttes.
The town is growing pretty fast...it's not really close to anything major, except stuff like Mt. Bachelor and the 3 sisters. If you like to ski, raft, mountain bike, fish, rock climb, etc...Bend is the place for you.
I *believe* Portland is a good 2-3hrs away. (I haven't driven it in a long time)

I have a few friends that live there...I could try and pass some info along to them, see if they know anybody.

Racist rednecks in Oregon?......I have only found Biodiesel chugging hippie commies in Oregon myself.

I just got my new car at Bend and drove back last month.
When I was returning my rental car, the guy who works at the rental company was from western washington, and he said he loves Bend and would probably never move again, I can only remember he mention about alot of sunny weather through out the year.

Well that's what some folks I meet from Coos bay told me about the place, Coos bay that is. Not the whole state obviously, lol.

As others mentioned, try Seth he lives there.

I drove there to buy a car and drive back last year. It's beautiful to me because it doesn't #$%^ rain anywhere near as much as here. Live here for a year and you'll trade trees for tumbleweed for as long as you live.

All in all, I think Bend would be a great place to settle down... very picturesque with far less conjestion, just enough so you wouldn't die of boredom.

However, I hear the winters are very harsh, core reason why the gentleman let his sporty ride go.... a major downside for many car enthusiasts.

My Sister & Husband live in Bend......transplants from Thousand Oaks, CA 4 yrs ago and they love it. The town, although small, is growing and is becoming a very cosmopolitan and a trendy place to relocate/retire (think a somewhat downmarket Aspen, CO). If you are an outdoor/active person this is a great place to live. The real estate market is going crazy- consequentlythe prices are going through the roof....think $500K minimum for for starters. No sales tax in Oregon but high personal income and property taxes...4 season weather but not brutal winters......sort of high desert climate.

Portland offers a lot of diversity and might be a place to consider too....real estate is more affordable yet all the the fun stuff (ocean, mountains etc)are all with a couple hours. Vancouver, Wa just across the river could be another option. Sales tax but no State Income tax and reasonable property taxes.

If you don't need a large city to work in , it seems like a great place to live.
that's what i've heard from a number of people. the work i do is mainly international / email / phone, so we're starting to look.

I have friends in Bend, OR. They are very happy up there and tell me that Bend gets more sunny days than any other city in the U.S. It may be cold, but it's sunny.

Bend is also a popular spot for vacation homes, leading to home prices that are not sustainable by the local economy and household incomes. Do some google searches on Bend, OR and home prices and you might see some articles claiming that Bend, OR real estate is overpriced by 20-30%. The price spike was driven in part by CA residents relocating to Bend.

Heck, it's Central Oregon. Not much out there for city life, but if you like the outdoors, I hear it's a great place to be.

You are welcome Hal.

Shoot me a PM if you would like to talk with my friend Johnny up in Bend. He's from OR, but lived in San Diego and here in the Bay for many years before moving back up to the Bend area. I'm sure he can give you a good perspective on what's it's like moving from the Bay (or CA) up to Bend.

hmm.... doesn't rain as much I don't know about that one. Maybe thats what they tell themselves. I work with someone that does the trip from bend to hillsboro every week. Been to his house a few times.

Bend is far from any main city.
Not many Hi-Tech jobs in bend which is why my co-worker does the bend to Hillsboro trip every week. This is a really far trip by the way.
Very nice views.
Still rains a lot.
You get 3 months of nice warm weather maybe 4 thats about it.
There is a reason why the college sports teams are the ducks and beavers, all associated with water.
They say people in Oregon have webbed feet.

I'm ready to move out of Oregon though. To cold and to much rain. Very pretty state though.

click here if you want to see what the weather is like. Its a warm 38 in Bend today.

A little off topic, but I just moved to Eugene, OR a couple weeks ago from Sacramento, CA. Aside from the near non-stop rain, I really like it. Oh, and in my brief time here, I've seen hundreds of hippies and also an old truck full of rednecks with a tattered rebel flag waving from the truck bed. Most of the time, the drivers on the road are more considerate, and there are less jack'ss's playing booming rap music than there were in Sacramento. I don't know how long I'll stay, but in the meantime it's a nice change.

P.S. The most frequently asked question in Eugene, OR... Do you burn? :p

If you're referring to the wacky tabacky, then yeah, I believe it.

thanks for the updates / thoughts, folks.

after researching bend a bit more (and reading their newspaper for a few weeks), we moved bend to the b list... waaaaaay too cold for me. i'm a bicycle, motorcycle + nsx year-round, shorts-wearing kinda guy.

what was i thinking? oh, i know:outdoors, fresh air, inexpensive housing compared to silicon valley... but the extended cold weather. ack!

I think you made a good choice. I dont think people realize how cold and wet Oregon is. It is a very beautiful state but there is a reason it is so green.
