Is it me or are big lips going out? Almost all car prototypes. Lambo, Nissan, Saleen, etc...are running designs that are flush?

May be more a facter of brake size and cooling issues.

Brent,
I been looking for some nice wheels for my nsx and I am noticing the same thing. Also I've been seeing that gunmetal or hyper black or other matted finish is definately the rage. Chrome and polish seems to be going out. just my .02

I am in process of installing of a sorcery widebody, rear only. I am getting kinda tired of the "deep dish" look. Would a concave flush wide rear rim look odd? Like I said I am seeing alot of these "flush-concave style wheels, especially on prototypes. Any input would be great....thks:smile:

I have 18/19 hp evo's currently. Stainless lip and silver center. Chrome is way too bling bling for NSX. I even like the all black look.....

I should look perfect. If you are going JGTC style might as well go with the JGTC rims to complete the package. Btw which Sorcery kit is this?

Actually real sorcery kit. Last one from Henry at gt-one. I have real sorcery side skirts too.....

I dont think so at all. Yes the one piece "look" is coming back..but on most exotics such as Lambo/Ferrari/etc...that have upgraded rims still have large ones, maybe not as maximized but a good 4" + on most rims....

These owners are spending big amounts of $$ on their sets , for example a nice set for a Murci can easily run up to $10k, and most are custom made- and go for the big lip..I know I would if I had the chance..

Big lips come with big risks. Manufacturers probably don't want to keep replacing bent rims all the time. I prefer big lips for the aggressive stance alone. Here's my 5" lip...

I'll be in the minority here but oh well...

I don't like the huge lips on rear wheels as its not in line with the fronts. The Porsche above is a good example. If you look at the car and only focus on the rear end then yes it looks good but when you look down the whole side of the car its out of place in my mind.

I went with some lip but not alot to maintain a clean look much like stock achieves but not stock.

I think big lips suck...but I like that!

Adavn has a nice choice of concave flush wheels. I still like a phat lip though. I have no problem with either.

wide lips on wheels remind me of an 'afterthought' mods when 'back-in-the-day' people would weld-on rings to make the wheels wider. but thats just my opinion. buy what you like.

generally wide-lipped wheels are weaker.

Can you elaborate on this? What big risks are involved?

I don't understand this. Even wheels with "no lip" has a lip... it's just on the other side of the face of the wheel. Do you mean that the wider the wheels is, the weaker it is? Even so, why would wide mean weak?

What am I missing? I've never heard of a big lip being bad in any way other than subjective opinions on aesthetics. I'd like to hear more regarding this.

All depends on the make of the wheel. THere are now tons of companies producing a one piece wheel that "looks" like a three piece. Great for us since not all of us wants to pay huge $$ for that look...

I love that porsche look, I think it follows the lines of the widebody stance as you go from the back to the front, the big lip falls into place perfectly.

In regards to rim strength, again depends on how its made, forged three piece are probably the strongest out there- but again most expensive, check out most high end wheel websites, they usually have an explanation of their wheel making process...

Well, if comparing forged to cast... this is something I could understand. But just to say that a bigger lip is weaker or inferior in some way just based on the pure fact that it's bigger is what I don't understand.

think about like a garbage can- the further you are from the 'bottom' (the disc of the wheel) the easier it is to bend it. you are correct that even 'normal' wheels have the 'lip' but also look at the way spokes are attached to it.
from what i have observed, the wheels with large lips have a very skinny disc as you have to make space somewhere to accomodate for the 'lip'. i would not track a car with those kind of wheels, they are for bling only.

It's safe to say if your going with a huge lip, at least make sure the barrel is forged. Cast barrels are softer and are'nt as forgiving as forged.

I think the newer cars are transitioning to the flush wheels. Lips are slowing fading out. Lips evolved just after the Beauty chrome trim ring went out in the late 70's/80's. Mid/late 90's-early 2000 age of fat lips era. So since most of our cars are mid/late 90's-2000, your fat lips matches your body.

Hope you know I'm just guessing? Take it easy:smile:

in terms of performance you can get Less Weight and Less Price with one piece wheels.

I think the NSX looks awesome on One Piece Wheels with Fat Spokes
