Blown Coolant Hoses

I would like to know which engine coolant hose(s) have ruptured on everyone out there. How were you driving the car? Freeway, normal city driving or HOT RODDING IT!

Summer before last I lost the large hose that connects the engine thermostat housing (out flow)to the tube on the forward firewall. This is the hose that has the two 60 degree (aprox) bends, looks like an "S". This is also where the coolant is released from the engine after reaching thermostat temp. When it comes out of the thermostat housing it has a lot of pressure and temperature behind it, especially if you were really exercising the engine, ie Hot Rod'n.

If somebody wants to make a Poll with this, have at it.

I think this would be interesting. Especially with summer here and a lot of NSXs on the road.

So, which hose failed and how were you driving?

The ones you mentioned and also the ones infront that go to the radiator. I had replaced both front and rear when they burst last time. Use OEM clamps.

Too bad the dealers don't sell the OEM clamps for those hoses. I went to 3 dealers and they said they don't have to OEM ones where you clamp. The only have the ones where you use a screw driver to tighten.

The clamps can be ordered as Brian says, I personally have never had a bad clamp. Besides the large hose mentioned above, the small one that is by the oil cooler is very suspect, especially if you have headers;). Been there, done that.

I had an interesting hose failure... at least interesting in the light of when and where it happened.

It was NSXPO #3, Leguna Seca, heading up the hill after turn 5, WOT, 3rd gear. The hose let go and coolant shot all over the engine compartment and all over the track. I came to a coasting stop after the left on the hill and part way up to the corkscrew.

The tow guy hooked to my front tow hook and started to pull me in. Unfortunately, I had the engine off and the key in the off position. This means I can't turn the steering wheel. My car heading left versus the tow strap going straight was not good. It bent the living stuff out of the tow hook. The tow driver would not stop even though I was honking at him.

Back in the paddock, there was much happier news. First, Doug Hayashi saved my arse because he had two extra large radiator hoses. (The one that blew was from firewall to engine - I think the middle one.) I still owe Doug a hose.

Someone else had antifreeze.

And, John Vasos from Brookfield Acura came over to make sure we got this done ASAP. All in all, the NSX community saved our weekend at Leguna Seca. We only lost one track session (it happened to be my wife's session.)

I still own John and Doug a big thanks. Thanks guys, that was awesome.
