I used to work with a mechanic of 36 years and he told me that one of the secrets to keeping a manual transmission running without trouble was to use synthetic motor oil for lubrication. I've now been using synthetic motor oil (Mobile One) in my Civic for 120K miles with out problems. In fact, it shifts very smoothly, even if it's 10 degrees out. As a bonus, I noted better gas mileage when I changed.

Am I recommending that you use engine oil in your tranny....nope. Just telling you my experience (and the years of experience of a professional mechanic). Do I use it in my NSX, no, not yet  .

I wanted to use moible 1 syntechetic 10w30 in my auto tranny I thought it was the best?? or will it atlest do a pretty good job??

Why would you even think about doing this?

In the '91 manual, it specs 10W30 motor oil for the transmission. I guess sometime later they changed to transmission fluid.

Technically you could with no ill effects but it would be better to use a lubricant specially formulated for the synchromesh tranny.

Use the OEM Honda stuff, the new Amsoil product or a mix of one quart GM synchromesh and two quarts GM synchromesh Friction Modified.

If you use regular motor oil in there your car will slowly begin to change color to pink and a portrait of Richard Simmons will appear on the hood.

Honda recommends Motor oil in the manual trans for 91+ NSX....as for auto trannys you need to use Honda Z1 Automatic trans fluid.

Honda started recomending thier "Manual Transmission Lube" in 1997 when the 3.2l came out.

Were there specialized synchromesh fluids back in '91? I was under the assumption that these fluids are specially formulated to be compatible with the "yellow" metals such as bronze, brass and copper that you'd find in the tranny but not in an engine.

Honda designed their manual transmissions to use Engine oil way back in early days of honda motor cars..long before the NSX designers got out of dypers.

Motor oil provides less drag and a more efficent transmission (over 80/90 gear oil)....Honda has never had Major syncro problems...The NSX has the most problems as far as syncros go in Hondas..the fact that the NSX has the most HP and an 8k red line has something to do with it...also the sprited type of driving that NSX drivers enjoy.

YES....but go synthetic:cool:

I am just trying to double check before i do it in 5 mins can anyone confirm thanks
LITFM. You should have an owner's manual. And if you're going to work on your own car, you should have a service manual, too. You can buy both here.

Sorry I was at the shop and we were trying to do it all in one day because our work schedules don't match but thanks I didn't do it. I need to figure out whats would be best for my tranny fluid.

10w30 mobile 1 and forget about it , works for mine no prob.Even worked for my turbo integra ( which was faster ) and now my itr powered civic fully skunk mod. have never had tranny probs with any

HE HAS AN AUTO GUYS!

make sure you give him advice for the auto tranny, not the manual.
