Car cover recomendation?

I'm thinking about getting a cover for my NSX. Can anyone give any good recommendation for a type/brand of car cover? Should I stick with OEM? Where can I find a good aftermarket one?

Thanks!

Go to www.carcover.com. They have a good selection of covers and can also make custom covers. I have a huge wing on my car and they advised that the B378 pattern for a 97 Supra would fit after I gave them photos and measurement of the wing on my car. If you have stock components then they have one specifically for an NSX but it will not have the separate flaps for the mirrors...

I chose the Noah material--cost isn't cheap as its 180 plus 15 shipping...They have other materials that are less also...

Any custom car cover for a stock NSX should have pockets for the side-view mirrors.

They have a reason for not using them--something about damaging the mirrors--go to the site and check it yourself-I can't remember but would not want the pockets anyway--too much of a hassle getting the cover on & off

That's funny, because I have found exactly the opposite to be true - the mirror pockets help in getting the cover on and off. This is true all the time, but particularly if the car is freshly waxed and/or if there is any breeze while putting the cover on outdoors. Each mirror pocket acts as an "anchor" for that side of the cover, to prevent it from sliding around or sliding off the side of the car while pulling each of the sides of the cover down over the car. Even when used indoors, the mirror pockets are a big advantage in this regard.

The other consideration with mirror pockets applies to any custom car cover - the closer the fit to the contours of the car's body, the less the cover will shift around in the breeze when used outdoors. Again, the mirror pockets act to hold the car cover onto the body, and prevent it from shifting. A car cover without mirror pockets will be more likely to shift around in the wind, increasing the possibility of causing scratches from any dust and dirt if the car is not absolutely clean.

That's why all the high-quality custom-fit car covers I've seen for the NSX - including Acura's as well as high-quality aftermarket covers - come with mirror pockets. In fact, the only covers I've seen that don't have mirror pockets are the cheap, generic "one size fits all" car covers, which I would never want to use on my NSX, for the reasons stated above (mostly the risk of scratching from a poorly-fitting cover).

You can get a quality car cover from your dealer, or from vendors like California Car Cover or Big Sky Car Cover. Don't get a car cover that doesn't fit your car like a glove; you will regret it.

I find this to be true as well. I just ordered a custom car cover from California Car Cover and it had side mirror pockets as well. I've also used a few other car covers and they ALL had side mirror pockets. Even a few generic ones from pep boys.

The side mirror pockers also help me determine whether I'm installing the car cover the right way. I find that sometimes its very had to determine which side is front and which side is back on car covers w/o side mirror pockets.

Then again, the car cover I got is twice as much as those listed in www.carcover.com. I got this car cover because it was suppose to be made from a material that is strong, light, exceptionally breathable, and my main reason: I was able to use powder detergent and wash it in my home washing machines because the material was so thin (yet strong).

A quick comparison of prices shows that California Car Cover prices tend to be more than carcover.com, but Big Sky Car Cover prices tend to be less than carcover.com. For example, in the Evolution multi-layered fabric, prices are $171 OEM (from A&H Motorsport), $170 California (Stormweave), $140 carcover (Matrix), $138 Big Sky (Technalon). Similarly, in the Noah fabric, prices are $200 California, $170 carcover, $155 Big Sky.

No car cover would ever fit mine like a glove---the rear wing stands as high as the roof -(AR Performance) and it's two different widths for each segment--each to their own--but like I said go to the site to see why they do not use pockets---I do know they have multiple materials and also show a whole lot of manufacturers---they list a cover for an NSX but noway would the stock cover fit mine..I have no ax to grind--it's a site I found and I like the qualities of the Noah material which is why I just bought a cover from them last week...I don't think better materials could be found for an exterior cover that would be economical anyway

I did. The only thing it said is that it will avoid "damage to mirrors". That's nonsense; I've been using car covers with mirror pockets for almost twenty years, on five different cars, and have never had any damage to mirrors.

What the website didn't mention is the main reason that some car covers are manufactured without mirror pockets; they're cheaper to make.

There are different kinds of car covers available - different fabrics, custom-fit vs one-size-fits-all, etc. Most of the car cover vendors have pretty good websites that describes what to look for in a car cover, and there's also lots of good information in the NSX FAQ. Read about the advantages and disadvantages of each, find out pricing from a variety of vendors, figure out what works best for you, and get it...

All right, I went back to the Carcover site and it states they have been around for 25 years and they use a special design which eliminates the need for the ears:

Unique Features of Our Car Covers:
Our car, truck, and van covers extend close to the ground, providing ample wheel protection.
There is a heavy duty elastic stretch cord sewn into the bottom of the car cover for a snug fit.
Due to our special design, our covers do not require mirror pockets, decreasing mirror damage.
Centrally located, side tie-down loops are included for retention of the car cover on windy days.
These car covers are stitched with heavy-duty outdoor thread to withstand the sun's harsh rays.
Our car covers are very low-cost insurance against the expense of refinishing a classic correctly!
(Currently, quality paint jobs on typical muscle cars, vans, or trucks cost from $4,000 to $10,000).

Available Options:
An optional car cover cable and lock set is available for $15.
An optional storage bag is also available for an additional $15.
An optional sew-on antenna sock is available separately for $15.
An optional liner for covers used on convertibles is available for $30.*
*A convertible top liner is only required on the Durafin and the Sunforger covers used on the newer convertible tops that are made of cloth, (like the Corvette Stafast, Prowler, Viper, Etc.), and are not required on older vinyl, (canvas type), slippery convertible top materials.

I also went to California covers and they have the exact same Noah material for a stock NSX that sells for 199---it does not state whether they use ears or not but likely they do--I did see vehicles they had pictured which had outside mirrors with no ears covering them and so I would ask....I live in AZ--that Noah material would be best or hot & dry...

I went to Big Sky just now-and they also have the Noah material and it stated there are two mirror pockets and it goes for 155.00--so if you like pockets this would be the place to buy your cover (mine is a 93 but the pricing is likely the same for any year). Compare & choose...The Noah material itself has a 4 year warranty...

Hahahaha! Funny how things go that way. Timing was perfect. :) However, I did find this thread to be a very good one and I hope that it helps people out in the future. I'm sure that it will!

Thanks to all who responded. Don't let it stop if there's more to say/car cover suggestions to make! :)

Exactly! The mirror pockets help a great deal. Especially after you have just put a fresh coat of Z@$#* on (your choice after the Z!). :D I bought mine here

In that link, Dali Racing sells the OEM car cover and notes that it is a polyester-cotton blend. In my post above, I mentioned a price for the OEM car cover from the A&H Motorsport website, and stated that the OEM cover is a layered Technalon fabric, because that's what their website says. I am not sure whether there is more than one OEM car cover, or if one of these websites is wrong. As noted earlier, different fabrics suit different needs; choose the one that is best for your particular situation.

(I do not have the OEM car cover, so I can't go out to the garage and check mine; I use a Technalon cover from an aftermarket vendor.)

Do any of the OEM covers have any slack for widebody NSX fitment? Need some recommnedations here or will I have to procure a custom cover from www.carcover.com?

Nope. The OEM do not accommodate wide body. My custom product does barely though. But then you don't have to pay the extra for customization. Attached are pictures from a customer with wide body.

Yours should work with the NSX-R wing, right? If so, need to order one as soon as Mark gets back from SEMA.

Shoot me a PM with instructions; want to make sure the car stays covered while in the garage this time.

Thanks!
