Car does 1 million miles! Honda? See...

Yet to see a yesterdays or todays "supercar" do 350.000 miles like this NSX we saw picture of on prime a while ago.

There was a story about a year ago about a 1998 Honda Accord Coupe in Woodbridge, VA that was traded at a Honda dealership there with 1,087,000 miles on it. He was putting 125,000 miles a year. All service had been done at that dealer, so mileage was documented. As I recall it was owned by a man that worked for a courier company, mapping roads in the region. Seems he drove constantly 6 days a week. If I remember correctly he was on his third clutch, 2nd transmission and except for some valve seals the core engine was original. This story was published in one of the auto magazines (Road & Track I believe) so I assume it was legitimate.

Re: Civic does the equivalent

In 2000 while shopping for a new Prelude, I saw a 10 year old Civic with 600k miles sitting out in the back of a dealership. It had just been traded in and other than the CA sun taking its toll on the paint and the driver's seat showing substantial wear, it was still going strong (or so they said). And these were commuter miles from Sacramento to the Bay area every day. Now, that kind of abuse should equal a million miles on rural roads easily.

Re: Civic does the equivalent

There's a Saab SPG that has over 1,000,000 miles. I saw the car when it had 800K or so on it. Looked good. A few clutches, third trans, and I believe it was the original engine. He did replace the steering wheel. Guess going that many miles requires that you hold the steering wheel for a really long time!

The guy just donated that car to a Museum in Wisconsin if I recall. He had hit 6 deer in the car and only stopped driving it because he felt as though another accident might not protect any longer.:wink: He bought another SLAAB:biggrin:

Oh I remembered a Al Bundy episode where Al's Dodge has right under 1 million miles, and could trade that in for some hot Dodge sportscar by Dodge USA - the catch was the 1.000.000 miles mark on the odometer was to be filmed :biggrin: (of course he screws up this time too).

Good reading, post more stories :)

Great episode, I think they were going to give him a Viper. Circa 1991 If I recall correctly.:wink:

Aha it was a Viper!!

Probably 5-7 years ago I watched that episode. Maybe that's why I didn't recall :)

We had a 1990 Honda Accord (Dark maroon color) here in BC that did close to 1,000,000km, so around 600,000miles without a rebuild, it was placed in the showroom of a local Honda dealer about 3 years ago. It then disappeared, not sure where it went, probably back on the street for more driving.

there are a number of volvo's on record with 1M+miles. iirc, there's a p1800 w/3M+ miles on it....

I think I read somewhere that the Volvo was just recently totalled:wink:

Yeah, but this is a Saab, and on top of that it is a TURBO SAAB:D

2.48 Million Miles On A Volvo

I used to have a Volvo, but I didn't put this kind of mileage on it: Record-Breaking Volvo Driver Irv Gordon Clocks Four Million Kilometers in His Trusty P1800.

Irv Gordon, Volvo's "Two Million Mile Man," just became the "Four Million Kilometer Man," breaking the four million kilometer barrier in the same shiny red 1966 Volvo P1800 he has been driving for more than 40 years.

Some stats:

* 710 oil changes. Irv recommends changing your oil every 3,500 miles (5,632 km).
* 100,000 plus miles (160,934 km) per year since retiring in 1996.
* 0 false starts. Zero. Zip. Not even on the coldest of mornings.
* 0 replaced engines. The Volvo P1800 still has its original engine, though it was rebuilt at around 675,000 miles (1,086,307 km).
* One new starter.
* $4,150. The cost of Irv's Volvo P1800 back in 1966. "The best $4,150 I've ever spent."
* 99 tune-ups (every 25,000 miles, or 40,233 km).
* 8,285 tanks of gas (The Volvo gets 25 miles, or 40.23 km, per gallon

My 1996 Civic has 261,000 miles currently on its original motor, transmission, clutch. I wonder if I could get a new Civic if I drive this 999,999 miles?
