when i first bought the car it wasnt running strong as it should, so i decide to change the spark plug and check the valve clearance. after taking out the ignition coil on piston 3, i notice some oil on it. not sure if it was bad or not i still used it anyways, well after checking the valve clearance and double checking, everything seemed good. started the car and when first taking off, the car seems to go, jump, go, jump while under 30mph, after 30 it seems ok.
anybody have a clue whats wrong? should i replace the ignition coils? ill check it with a meter when i get my hands on one.

91, with 105,000 miles on it.

Did you check the gap on the new spark plugs?

Did you install the recommended OEM replacments?

Did you replace the head cover gaskets and hold down washers?

Did you reconnect both O2 sensors?

What did you set the valve clearence to?

i bought stock plugs recommended for the car, ngk's gap is .04

head cover gaskets and those grommets/ NO. i clean the head gasket and honda bond some corners. i will replace those forsure though.

reconnect both sensors

intake clearance at .006 to .007
exhaust at .007 to .008

how do i actually adjust the gap on the plugs when the manual says not to stick a blade type gap into the sparkplug

I remember my shop instructor said he prefers to not check the gap on new plugs, since the tool can abrade away the platinum coating. If you do it, be very gentle and careful. I don't know if you can actually adjust the gap.

that wire type measuring tool is neat and only 3 bucks, but yeah i will be ordering new seals this week just to make sure, the head cover seal looks new but i guess ill change that out too. im goin to recheck the valves again to see if my work was good or not, because befor i did anything to the car it ran ok.. lack of power at the take off but it wasn't jumpy when i first gas it.

At that mileage, I would definitely replace the air filter and clean the throttle body... I was having similar problems (rough idle etc) and had the spark plugs and coils replaced and had the throttle body cleaned as well. Now it runs very strong and is idling smooth again! :) Good luck

well i changed out all the seals and rechecked the valve clearance, now the problem seems to be less then befor, but it is still there, any chance it might be a bad ignition coil? i might buy a new set but the thing is the dealer im gettin it from is selling the 95+ ignition coil, and i asked if it would work with my 91, he said they are both different part numbers, so does anybody know if it would work with my car or do i have to buy the one that is for my year only. i dont understand why they would be different part nunbers.

Definitely replace both the spark plugs and coils. I had both those parts replaced for free on my 95... It was covered under some extended emissions warranty! So it won't hurt to ask if your car is covered. Either way have that done and clean your throttle body replace air filter and you'll be good.

are you the original owner? how so can i get the extended emissions warranty? go to acura dealer or something and ask? i changed filter and clean throttle body as far as i can stick my fingers in with a rag, planning on taking it apart because it was kinda dirty with black oil/grim whatever. but if i cant get those coils replaced, do you know if the 95 coils will work with the 91? anyone?

Not sure about the differences between the 91 and 95's coils... but the 95 did introduce certain features like drive by wire and other things like that so it might be a little different. maybe a newer version?

And no I'm the 3rd owner of this 95...

Found a link for you - it doesn't seem that the 91-94's are covered although I have no idea why. It only seems logical that the older OBD systems have the same defect in detecting and alerting the driver in the event of a misfire... Of course I'm no expert here!

But yes once you find and install the right parts your issue should go away.

I'm sure LarryB or RON98 could answer this one :)

well problem still remains, its wierd its like ever since i changed the spark plugs this problem accured, ive checked the valves plenty of times, i also checked the ignition coils all of them and they read 1.3- 1.5 ohms on all. seems a bit high, but this was checked when they were warm. the car is jumpy when im taking off normal/slow, but when i give it a bit more gas then usual its fine. suggestions?

95 coils will not work on a 91. one has 2 pin type plug the other has 3 pin type plug.

im going through the same symptom as you but also my rear bank cat is glowing red hot after a hard run. this tells me unburnt fuel is burning in the cat overheating it. two of my coils were moist so replacing them is probably going to fix it. its parked and not moving until i get paid this friday to buy some new coils.

Don't forget to also replace the o-ring for the coilpack to seal off the oil from reaching your coil pack. Happened to me before. The car bog badly like running on just 5 cylinders. Better change all the o-rings and replace the bad coil packs and get a new set of oem spark plugs. Check if your 02 sensors if they are bad.

Btw check also if your ignitor is still good. After replacing mine the car seems to be running smoother than before and no rich smell from teh exhaust.

I had a similar problems. It ended up being a bad fuel pump. I replaced it and now it runs smooth. No bogging at 3,000 RPM.

I went through several checks before I arrived at a bad fuel pump.

I checked:
- new Spark Plugs
- new O2 sensors
- valve clearance adjustment
- new coil packs
- cleaned throttle body completely
- swapped with good throttle body
- replaced fuel filter
- switched with good ECU

I narrowed it down to the fuel pump, once i put a got the fuel pressure on the fuel filter. I noticed that it was below specs. So it was either the fuel filter or fuel pump. I replace it with a Walbro fuel pump.

How much was the new fuel pump? and how do you install it? I hear you have to drop the gas tank?

you can adjust the plat or irridum plugs, just dont touch the tip.

pretty straight forward adjustments.

thank you everybody for all the help, my car is running fine now. i figured out the problem.... every single spark plug was off by .003 and that made a huge difference. i didnt bother to check when i first install because i didnt have the proper tool and i didnt want to damage the tip. something so simple and i didnt bother, silly me. Well i changed out all the belts, hoses, waterpump, fluids and etc. i still need to replace fuel filter, clean my throttle body and lots more.

fuel filter is best done with an impact gun.

if you use a breaker bar, you'll be there for hours.

I did mine w/ regular hand tools, no problem. Just need an extension & approach from a good angle.
