My center channel speaker is blown in my red '91, that i just bought about months ago. Anyways i was just going to replace it with another OEM speaker.( I did see someone on the prime who repairs them for our cars)

But before i do that i want to know if anyone has or seen, a 6 1/2 inch sub fit in the center speaker location. ( I have seen other peoples 8 inch and 10 inch sub boxes on the passenger- side floor, I am sure it sounds nice, but i don't want a box on my floor.)

I think the center channel speaker is 4 1/2 inches.(is it a sub ?) So i want to know if anyone had any custom idea's for a 6 1/2 sub. I know there is not much room back here.( anything behind the seats is obviously out of the question ) Let me know what you think ?

Please check with Dali to be sure but I don't think that has been available for some time.

No - it's not a sub - in fact it is a mid-range speaker with a crude high-pass filter to acually cut off the low frequencies. The footwell speaker is no more a sub either just the same speaker crossed for lower frequencies.

It's not going to be easy to shoe-horn a 6.5" driver in there without some serious customization re-work.
Remember also that if you install a bass or mid-driver you will need an external amp - by the time you do that, why not just install a quality set of 6.5" components to replace the door speakers (whose amps will surely follow the footwell/centre to doom before long).
Even without a sub (or centre), that will give you a pleasing result with better low end and much better highs through separate crossed over tweeters.

Thank you for the input guys.

I agree i would love to upgrade the whole sound-system. It's just that i just put in a RPS clutch, Procar intake, ( i only spent the money on it b/c i loved the way it looked) Clifford G5 alarm, and i put together a nitrous kit.( but i am having second thoughts about putting it in) and i am now ordering headers.

So to say the least i am running low on money for the car.

I was just wanted to see the opinions for the sound systems for our cars.

I would like to have a sub in the center speaker location. So when the money is there i might try to do something custom there.

Well, i need to replace my center speaker, and
I made the decision to try and do something custom with the center speaker location in our cars. I plan to make a fiberglass enclosure for one "8 PUNCH stage 2. I am think about mounting the sub so it's firing towards the back wall of the cabin.I think the space need for a sealed box for this sub would be small enough for that space. And the mounting depth is shallow enough too. ( I want to put the sub in that spot. I would have gotten a JL 8w7. When it's comes to subs JL audio is hard to beat. ) The JL 8w7 would never fit in that spot. I think the min. req. sealed space for it is 0.60

8" 4-ohm subwoofer
molded polypropylene woofer cone
30-ounce magnet
power range: 50-200 watts RMS (400 watts peak power)
frequency range: 40-250 Hz
sensitivity: 84 dB
top-mount depth: 3-13/16"
sealed box volume: 0.25 cubic feet
ported box volume: 0.65 cubic feet

Here's the sub>http://www.crutchfield.com/S-WtRSErMUQ48/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=520&I=575P28S4

I look at the location in the car, and i think it very do-able.
Let me know if you like the idea, or have any input..... Thanks

If you want musical bass and not banging bass in a very, very small area you might want to try one of the these.... plays down to 35hz, and has 11.5 mm of Xmax. Very unique! And at $41 you can't go wrong to give it a try. BTW: Tang Bang makes some pretty damn good drivers.

Tang Bang 6-1/2" subwoofer

Thanks for the suggestion. I had alittle louder bass in mind.

If you want musical bass and not banging bass

I don't like pounding bass.I like tight hitting bass, with the ability for the bass to Quad-out sometimes.
I have a JL audio '10W6 in a braced fiberglass box, in my truck and it's sounds really good. I think i will go with the 8 inch sub. I don't think the 6.5 will be loud enough for my taste.

Someone did this before, I remember seeing the pics with the sub between the seats but I can't find them. I'll keep looking....

Sounds interesting...

Sounds like an abitious project! A rear firing sub in the console would cool to see, if the formed enclosure looks similar to stock. I recall some previous photos, but they all look extremely aftermarket.

Molding a console similar to size and shape of stock and putting matching vinyl on it with a concealed sub would be slick, but I doubt anything larger than a 6" sub would fit.

By the way, I have a rough enclosure made of MDF that fits behind the driver seat. It was made for a Earthquake 10SWS. If you can handle 4" of space behind the driver's seat, I'd be happy to give it to you. It's small and does not take full advantage of the sub, but if you're on a tight budget, it could get you by for a while.

Whats up shaun thanks for the offer about the box. It's just that i have a punch 5002 amp behind my driver's seat mounted on the trim. It makes for a pretty clean mount. It's running my MB quarts 6.5 components. And i have a punch 3001 to mount on the other side to run my 8 in sub.

,

I am waiting though until i can do something like you talked about. I want it to be OEM looking too. I was looking at the car when i ran my speaker and power wires. And it will be some work b/c you would need to make the speaker box / custom trim have 5 holes to line up to tie the rest of the trim pieces together. Anyways thanks for the motivation. I was close to just saying it's to much of a pain in the neck, and just make a 8 inch box for the passenger floor. I am sure they sound nice there too. I just though if i could do something different it would be nice. IMO if i can make it firing back at the wall, the sound will be awesome.

Yeah, amps behind the seat would make my offer unrealistic. Good luck in pursuit of a sub solution that differs from the norm. There's a lot of good informatoin on this forum about the subject.

Just got the mdf, fiberglass resin, cloth, and some liquid nails. The building will begin soon, for a box .25 ft. maybe a tad smaller, to go between the seats. I have made one fiberglass box before. I want to make this sub fire back at the wall. So the plan is to make it look as OEM as i can. I will need to have a piece of trim made to fit in the middle, Just like the OEM middle trim piece, just with more of a cup to fit the box. So wish me luck... I will be back with pics.

This is what i am going for half way down the page >http://www.nsxprime.com/forums/showthread.php?t=40751&highlight=speaker+box

I am about to start building the box. I need help..... D'Ecosse, Malibu rapper,
Which direction should make the sub fire ? back at the wall ? straight forward ? downward torwords the arm rest ? Or up torwords the roof ?
Which would sound the best ? Thanks , Josh

Spent ages looking for this pic from GinaK 's car - I had a recollection that she was the one with the inverted sub install, but clearly I'm mistaken - but at least I remembered partly right in that she had the sub installed in the rear centre location.

This was the thread it was taken from

and this post has the specs of the audio system in it (as well as all the other mods of course)

It's a Kicker CVR 8

I still don't think I want that right in my ear

OK - I know there was another in that location from my recollection that was inverted but I don't even know where to start tried the obvious search strings & it's like looking for needle in haystack!

D'Ecosse, Malibu rapper, Thanks. I will get a camera so i can get graded on my project. I took the outline of the back wall, in fiberglass mat. I think it going to be easier to mount the sub facing up like Malibu was talking about. So i am going to mount it on a angle facing back at the wall but up. It will end up aiming at the middle to upper half of the glass. I will try to post pics tomorrow.

Sorry about not having pics yet. I promise to post pics soon, though they will not be the step by step pics. Just the Finnish pics, and installed pics. I am just about done.

Just a hunch but D'Ecosse might prefer Scottish pics. :)

Scottish pics ??

I have a JL audio 6w0 in my bmw and its very impressive for such a small speaker. Does anyone make a small box for something like that, or will I be the first one?
