I am going to clay my car next weekend (Red/Black '98). My question is; should I glaze the car after I clay it, and before I wax it? I've searched FAQ's and can't find much about glazing.

What's the purpose of "glazing"? Does it remove swirl marks?

It needs to be clayed, but otherwise the paint is in very good condition.

Thanks in advance.

Glaze?

You didn't find much on "glaze" because it's not really a defined or standard process. It's a term that doesn't have much meaning outside of a tradename. Do you have a specific "glaze" product that you've bought?

In any event, you should do the clay first.

And then you should apply your protectant of choice. Either a conventional carnuaba wax (i.e. Zymol, Griots, Meguires, Mothers, etc) or a synthetic "polish" such as Zaino.

Thanks Jimbo. I've read a number of your post regarding Zaino and I'll take your advice/experience and use there product after I clay the car.

BTW, what's you're opinion of Zaino clay versus a clay product that I purchase at a local auto parts store?

I've only used the Zaino clay so I'm not sure how the others stack up.

I've heard that other clay products have left a residue. I've also heard that some like the Clay Magic product.

The Zaino clay worked very well for me. I've used it on my Black NSX and now my Red one too (in addition to my other cars). One thing I do like about the Zaino clay is that it's recommended that you use the Zaino car wash as the lubricant.

You just put a capful in a spray bottle with some warm water and it really works well. You don't need an expensive bottled lubricant.

And the Zaino car wash is really great too.

Regards,
Jim

Thanks. I'll give the entire Zaino product line a go. Much appreciate your advice. Let you know how it turns out.

I've learned a great deal reading your post, and it is much appreciated.

My understanding (from detailing expert Larry Emmons, of Emmons Coachworks) is that most brands of clay detailing products work as an abrasive, but that Clay Magic has an exclusive (patented) formula because it works as an adhesive rather than an abrasive. Larry recommends Clay Magic based on his experience with many different brands.

Funny you should post this photo in a thread in which Jimbo had a very balanced post (the first of his two posts above) and I didn't even mention you-know-what in my post...
