Hi

I'm running into a problem with my climate control maybe some of you have experienced the same problem.

Whenever the engine is running and I turn on the heater I hear a loud screeching sound coming from the engine and a moments later the car shuts off.
This only happens when the engine is running. When the engine is off and I turn on the heater everything is fine.

Have any of you experienced this problem?

Thanks -Rich

It's a 91 stock motor, manual.

Is there a pulley or belt that turns on when I turn on the heater?

I turned off the ac and it still does the same thing.

I'll check the ac compressor.

If you set the climate control unit to "AC off" the AC compressor should not run but there is a problem with the fan control unit that will run the compressor all the time. Its likely you have that issue because your compressor is seized from running when it should not have.

To elaborate on BrianK's point, disconnect the fan control unit behind the passenger seat beside the main relay (highlighted in red). This will ensure that the AC is OFF.

Thanks everyone for all your help! It's confirmed it's a seized ac compressor and fan control unit. How easy is it to replace the compressor?

Any competent shop that does AC work should be able to replace it and the receiver dryer, evac and recharge.

I repair the fan control units, so let me know if I can help you.
