Just bought a new clutch masters stage 4 and putting 1st and reverse is very hard to go in and also now when i shift quick from 2nd to 3rd it grinds maybe the clutch isnt disengaging all the way should i adjust the pedal please help Thanks

I know nothing about that particular clutch. What year is your car? If we're talking about a dual-disk clutch similar to the stock units then it sounds like the clutch was not "initialized". Check the FAQ for how to do this. If there is Some, but not much play in the pedal then it isn't likely just pedal adjustment.

This is the stage 4 version of the same clutch RM sells, or sold. Back when I used to install alot of them, though i no longer do, it was very common to have this problem. If the clutch is initalized properly, the problem is probably a clutch pedal adjustment. (once a pedal has been used about 25 or 30 times, initialization is not likely to do anything.) Though this is not normally required, or reccomended, if the rebuilder removes too much material from the p-plates and fly, the overall assembled height of the clutch stack will not be enough for the starting position of the throw out bearing. You will need to move it closer by taking some of the free play out of the clutch pedal. You do this by loosening the lock nut on the push rod at the clutch master / clutch pedal clevis. Turn the rod OUT of the clevis to reduce free play. Make this adustment in very small amounts, no more than half turn at a time till first gear works smoothly. If you move it too much, you will keep the clutch from acheiving full disengagement and will shortly burn up. Do not do this. Make sure that you still have at least an inch of movement at the top where no effect on the clutch is detected by pedal movement.

Good Luck,
Mark Basch
