Compression test?

It might be a stupid question, but I want to know what does the compression test would tell me and let's say it fails what can I do to correct it?

Great info. I just had mine tested and the results were:

cyl 1: 230
cyl 2: 225
cyl 3: 227
cyl 4: 227
cyl 5: 232
cyl 6: 229

Which seems good for a 3.2L:

Had the numbers ran on my NSX before I bought it.
Tells you if the rings are good.
