Well, It looks as though I am actually buying the comptech supercharger  Im using the money from the sale of my porsche 944 turbo to fund to FI quest... I have some questions

1. can I use my stock exhaust and header? shad from comptech says yes, does anyone disagree. I will eventually upgrade these items but they will remain stock for awhile.

2. Do I need an AEM unit?

3. Will my stock ECU work or will I need a SOS supertune ECU or comptech unit?

4. Do I need bigger injectors?

5. What kind of spark plugs should I be using?

6. Should I replace my fuel filter? 92 with 39k...

7. How long should it take for a master acura/nsx tech to install this item?

Big thanks to Tim (jorligan) for all your help.

1. You can. You will probably pick up another 25HP though if you go aftermarket.

2. No

3. Stock is fine.

4. No

5. Dunno. Some say going with copper with give you a little extra performance.

6. dunno

7. I think they quote around 12 hours. A master tech who has done one many times can probably do it in less time.

You will probably be looking at someone around 300-310rwhp without the i/e/h aftermarket parts.

When I installed the CTSC on my 1994 NSX with 15k miles, I left everything else stock without any problem. I then changed the headers, intake, Type-R gears and R&P as I went on. I still have the stock exhaust though.

Steve, I had talked to people that kept everything stock and then went to aftermarket headers and exhaust and were dissapointed. They said they really couldn't feel any difference. Did you have the same experience when you put the headers on?

Mike,

Congrats to the sale... and decision to go FI.

Here are my opinions:

1. You can utilize the stock exhaust and header but remember any improvements to exhaust flow makes a difference in Hp and Torque. Note the 92 stock headers is cast and honestly is a horrible design, changing the header alone will be an improvement. As far as exhaust, its more of a preference as well if you want a louder sounding car.

2. AEM is great I personally love it… I always fine tune it on the fly as it offers complete tuning capabilities, but remember it is not emissions legal and you need to tune it to maximize your end goal package.

3. When I was looking into the Comptech unit a few years back, the stock ECU was recommended as the best option, though the AEM was non-existent. However to maintain full daily drivability the stock ECU and Honda’s million of dollars in R&D in fuel and ignition maps is the best route if you do not want to spend or enter the world of aftermarket engine management and its little quirks.. Yet since a SC in a NSX is not OEM the AEM is a better way to go… (personal opinion)

4. Larger injectors are great, but for the stock Comptech kit I would not use it, going larger again alters you’re A/F ratio and you will need some form of engine management unit to control injector pulse widths. Ex. AEM or Apexi AFC.

5. Plugs, I run NGK Iridum a 9 in heat range. I used them in all my/our forced induction cars and in Supra’s back when I worked for Performance Factory NYC.

6. I would, it’s a cheap maintenance part that would allow safety and reliability to the motor and ijectors.

7. I too heard 12 hrs… though I have a friend who installed it in 10 hrs but he himself is a mechanic with availability of tools and worked on aftermarket forced induction kits.

In conclusion overall I would recommend running the stock kit and see how you like it. Make the mods and changes as you go. Less headache in tuning it too. And its worth wild when you work on your car in stages as you can further appreciate everything you have done. =)

Best of luck and enjoy FI !!

I don't know, David. I put the Type-R gears on the car and WOW, the car feels a lot quicker at low end. The headers certainly add hp to the car at high end but I don't spend much time up there to tell the difference between before and after. I am still debating if I should change the exhaust since the Exedy clutch requires me to step the gas pedal more to achieve a smoother launch. With a loud exhaust, it might be observed as being obnoxious. If I change exhaust, it would be a Magnaflow.

Broke less than an hour ago, just noticed it as I was backing into my driveway and the whole car was shaking violently!

Ill call my DPS rep. tommorow for a possible goodwill but I doubt I will have any luck. Never hurts to try.

I would think working for Acura you may have a good chance of a goodwill repair. Who knows. It sure doesn't hurt to try. You mileage is so low too!

Im still about 10 years out of warranty. Ill try my best but it looks like an SOS trans with short gears in in my future.

You know the short gears and R&P are a real nice mod to the car. You will notice the difference and not have to worry if the car is tuned correctly. You can always do the CTSC later on. Best of luck.

That's what I'd do, too. Sorry to hear about the car.

Any news on whether Acura will cover part of the repair?

waiting to hear...

I installed the Comptech supercharger on my 92 NSX myself, it took 2 easy days [6-7 hours]. What a differance boost makes! In addition to the SC I have the Comptech cold air intake, headers and exhaust system.
I did not change injectors or ECU. Drove the car from Chicago to NY for NSXPO right after the installation. Car ran flawlessly and got over 29 MPH. Ran it at Watkin's Glen, had power to spare. Packed the car with souveniers and headed back to Chicago running like a top. The supercharger is a great bolt on addition.
If you have any additional question contact me any time.

Mike I am very sorry to hear about your snap-ring failure. That really sucks-especially when you were just about to do the CTSC. The good news is that you will have the $ to handle the problem in the event Acura does not goodwill the failure.

I am a little surprised with a tranny in snap-ring range you did not have the fix done as soon as you got the car. How about a 6 speed update?

I hope it all works out - I would have loved to see the CTSC on your car!
PS - Saw some great pictures of the NSX day at your place.

I should have a six speed for sale soon.

Hey Mike, that sux about your snap sing. At least you were in your driveway and not wailing around some New Jersey jughandle. If Acura won't goodwill the repair, check in with LarryB - he may have a rebuilt Type-R trans in inventory.

BTW, I was driving around on a broken snap ring for an unknown length of time. When Larry finally opened the trans, he found the ring was cracked but the pieces stayed in place. It could be yours broke a long time ago, and the pieces finally fell out the other day.

Also, do yourself a favor, consider installing a new clutch while the trans is out, especially if you plan to install a CTSC.

Mr. Conifer,

I was very lucky to be in my driveway when this happened. The snap ring was checked 3 months ago when I did my clutch/flywell and it was not broken and still intact then. LarryB and Acura are both involved and thats all I can comment on at this time.
