For some odd reason, my USB ports, DVD ROM as well as DVD R-RW are not working on the desk top. There is power alright as the door opens, the system recognizes them but has that yellow ! on the device manager/hardware.

For the CD/DVD drives, the error code is "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)"

For the USB, initially it said the USB devise was not removed safely.

I installed and installed all the drives, but same problem.

I tried every trick with troubleshooting this but don't seem to be able to resolve it. Did a system recovery with no help. Even tried to insert the Application CD for Drivers just to see if that would help but it just won't read it. Are they corrupted with no fix? What is code 39? Does opening in safe mode offer a trick that I am missing? Last time I took a computer to Best Buy, it took 3 weeks ........ and they just put new hardware.

I am running Windows XP. TIA.

You've been attacked my the tragic "TTBAC" Virus (otherwise known as "Time To Buy Another Computer" Virus). I'll have to verify your error code for any modifications to your PC which may void your warranty completely.

Yes, I stayed at a Holiday Inn last night:biggrin:

Thanks guys. The Google link to Microsoft worked and I am glad I was not the only one who seemed to have encountered this problem .... The automatic fix was quick and immediate with restart.

USB is working, the DVD R/RW is working, and I'll figure out soon why the CD ROM while now being recognized as a driver is not playing.

Prime's Geek squad is the best
