I dont understand why my tank keeps over flowing if i drive the car hard.

Occasionally on sundays Ill take a drive thru local mountains on some curvy roads, if i stay in the higher RPM range say 3rd or 4th gear around 5K - 5500 RPM after a a short while i notice i get a burning oil smell

I have searched high and low and cant find a leak anywhere. AT ALL...
This smell only showed up after my last oil change though so its a new thing, did not happen in the first few 1-2 thousand miles i had the car.

also I notice that my coolant tank is a bit messy after these drives, as in the tank shows signs of over flow from the cap, but the tank is not overly full and doesnt show signs of a leak. I think that as the temps get high fluid boils a bit and comes out of the cap, but im not sure how to fix this prob...

new rad cap or is this what people mean when they say you need a new Expansion tank???????????/

thanks for any help

What are the temps running? Maybe it is a overheating smell instead of oil. First thoughts would be check fan, pressure cap, thermostat, make sure the radiator air path isn't clogged. I see you did a 2002+ conversion has the radiator been out of the car? If so maybe there is air in the system.

I didn't do the conversion was like that when i bought it-

car has been checked at dealer , but that doesnt mean anytihng... every body makes mistakes.

It could definately be a smell from coolant burning if it overflows.
i dont know if the rad was ever out of the car but i assume not since it doesnt have to come off for a swap.

but the temps are fine- never gets hot just below mid line always

Another remote possibility is a head gasket going, and pressurizing the cooling system, resulting in the tank seeing pre. and burping out coolant. I hope not! A comp. test / leakdown will tell, if no other easier options are found.

You have coolant coming out from under the cap or from the purge hose? If coolant happens to slosh up against the cap then you can have a bit of coolant purged out the hose along with air, which is normal. However, frequent purging at lower temps/pressures would indicate the cap is bad. It isn't supposed to open up until the system gets past 14 psi. Caps are cheap enough that having it tested could cost as much as a new cap...can't say the same for the bottle. Make sure the cap seats well and that there's no crud on the gasket interface.
Coolant should never be coming out from under the cap.

I also had a cracked tank which sloshed out some coolant. I first had replace the cap without success. Carefully cleanup the exterior of the tank and see if you create the leakage with some active driving. Good Luck.

Yes that would suck, but I've seen it happen on numerous cars in the past. Hopefully it won't be.

Sorry, but I am confused.

Is the tank leaking coolant?

Is oil leaking?

Are you not sure what is leaking, but you smell something after your last oil change?

What is the oil level?

What is the coolant level?

Coolant tanks can crack and go bad. Mine did. If you see coolant around the tank, you may have a bad tank. Go ahead and replace it with this.

$300 for plastic and/or aluminum coolant tank seems quite high to me...? Other than Dali, are there alternative, cheaper options? I am thinking about painting my stock one black and calling it a day...but...

My tank had a crack that I couldn't find for the life of me. I just replaced mine with another used one I got on prime for $45. I've had it a year and it's been great. I'm also way too cheap to spend $300! $100 is more reasonable to me, lol.

Does'nt mean your cheap, it means your smart.

Is the tank leaking coolant? coolant is on the top of the tank as well as the little ledge surrounding it.

Is oil leaking? dont know - cant find any leak

Are you not sure what is leaking, but you smell something after your last oil change? yes

[b[What is the oil level? full like its supposed to be

What is the coolant level? full like its supposed to be..

dont know what else to say

OK,

If your tank is original I would replace the tank and the cap and be done with it. If you DIY this will be under $150 for Tank, Cap and coolant.

If the tank is relatively new, get a new cap:).
