My condo's parking garage has been broken into several times in the past month. The first time they broke into 2 cars and stole some garage openers. The door electronics were then changed so that everyone's opener has its own codes that can be disabled in the event they get taken without killing everyone else's access.

The night before last they (assuming it is the same person/people) came back and broke into 3 more cars and cut the security camera and stole it off the wall. They also took the realtor keyboxes containing the keys for the buildings and all of the condos currently for sale here.

The association board says that "at this time they don't plan on changing the locks to the buildings".. And now there's absolutely no cameras in our garage and I don't feel like my cars are safe here (let alone my condo itself).

So far they just seem to be targeting cars with ipods and other easy to grab things that are in plain view, but it is only a matter of time before something worse happens.

They don't seem to take security seriously at all. WTF can I do? Just being at home is making me angry. Not being at home makes me think someone is here stealing my car(s) or robbing my house.

Definitely get your own alarm and camera monitoring system that you can view online (check Costco.com). Do a search here as alarms have been discussed here in the past. Get an aftermarket alarm on your NSX/lojack/gps locator/removeable steering wheel.

I have some of those things already, but I won't go into detail for obvious reasons. I'm emailing my condo board right now to see if I can convince them to get a multi camera setup with a hard disk DVR. I might pay for it myself if necessary.

Get the door armor: www.djarmor.com
Upgrade your locks to commercial grade or contact a locksmith
Install patio door and window security bars
Bolt down a safe and keep the valuables in it
Tint the windows with a security film (thicker than regular tint)

I told my wife if this crap keeps up I'd be buying a gun. I was surprised when she didn't object.

How is a gun going to stop someone from beaking into your car when it's in the garage of your building? I'm all for gun ownership, but it should be for the right reason. Now if you don't feel safe around your building then that is a legitimate issue.

X 1 billion (especially reinforcing your door jamb and frame)

The only thing I can add is make sure the lock you get is bump-lock proof and make sure the security laminate is at least 11 mils thick minimum. If you do that, you won't need window security bars, especially if you tandem the security laminate with glass break sensors on your alarm. Also, video cameras and lights will add another layer of protection.

It isn't. It is just a knee jerk reaction to being really mad.

This is what I have at my house, in addition to camera setup, a dog, a sign for the dog, while sticking to my 3 G's "God, Gold and Guns."
Put this sign (or similar) in your car window along with a camera or even fake camera..and I gaurantee you they won't even get close..

They will stop breaking into cars when people stop leaving stuff in plain site.......and breaking into a house is a BIG step from breaking into cars.

Until then, buckle up.

Does that mean you can get the AP ammo? As far as I know, that's LE/Military only. The lead core stuff is worthless.

Of course, I just sighted in a .338 Lapua, so I'm a little biased.

You can get the SS190 round blackmarket (along with damn near anything else you could ever imagine), but there are several sources that claim the SS192 will penetrate most readily available armor.

I think you're right. They seem to be only stealing ipods and GPS, etc right now.

Its a very common trend in most parts of the country right now.

Small groups (gangs?) of thieves target an area or city that is easy pickings. Then after several weeks when the local Police departments step up the activities to combat them, they simply move on to another area in the same metro and repeat the process.

..I could take a low-blow shot and say, "that's what you get for living in apartments.. <cough> I mean a condo..."

Buy a house and make it into a castle...

I would try to gather up some homeowners in the complex that can make some noise. Present the camera idea to the association and tell them that you guys and the majority of the homeowners are willing to take on an assessment due to cost of monitoring. It can be done. You just have to gather some key people and promote the idea. Good Luck. I know the feeling.

I've been trying to sell this place for like a year and a half. it is not going so well. There's a number of things going on, all of which add up to me being stuck here against my will. :frown:

Unfortunately, condo associations are terrible for security. A couple years ago I had similar issues in my condo. The associations solution was to hire some skinny rent a cop that was too scared to do anything. The only good thing about the poor economy is it has forced all the low class renters out of my neighborhood. Now we have higher class renters.
