i have a 96 nsx with the old style whipple comptech charger. at idle the charger product almost like a rod knock type of noise but when the rpm goes up the noise goes away is that normal?. what can i do to get rid of it? thanks for the help guys.

Funny, I hear like a lost set of car keys in mine when it idles!

You mean the one with the gold chain around its neck or the other one with the pimp daddy cane?
Larry B says some noise is normal, its just the way it is.
Is this a new noise?
Have you had the unit long?
Did it make any noise before?
Did you change anything like the intake or air filter to another brand, so now you hear things more?
Three different air filters and they each make my Whipple sound different.
Add in an AIS and look out, even more noise and rattles.

i just bought the car last week. the previous owner say the noise is always been there i believe him and since the car have full record and show the charger has been serviced i am not too concerned. but the noise is kinda embarrassing at stop lights

When the car is idling you will most of the time hear a up and down metal rattling sound from the SC. The Comptech instruction manual says it's normal on the last page. No need to worry unless your engine falls off when you drive away. Then you know something is wrong.

Now when you say its embarrassing, then I am really wondering what is going on and how loud this noise is.
I would get another member to listen to that or video us the noise.
My noise or Eds is by no way embarrassing.
Anyone else???

Mine does the same thing, as far as i can tell they all do it. At least all of them that i've heard...

The low idle noise is caused by gear lash in the Whipple gear drive for the SC, it is normal and it can be reduced by raising your idle by about 100 rpm. Depending on the year and engine management this is easy to do. If you have a 91-94 you can adjust your idle by following the instructions in the service manual sec.11-84. If you have an AEM the idle is changed in the AEM software in the Idle Table.

I have my idle set at 950 rpm and have no blower lash sound except when the AC kicks on and the idle drops to 800 rpms for a quick second than back to normal. I have an AEM so I can command any idle point I want. without the AEM it will be trial and error following the instructions in the service manual. For those of you with 95 and newer, I would assume the process for idle adjustment would be similar but you will need to find a 95 or newer service manual to know for sure.

I just installed a used Whipple on my 91' see[ gearbox noise johnboy ] . I have the same noise from the gears. I topped-up the the oil on the dipstick and that seemed to help. I don't think other people outside of the car actually recognize the sound as noise. I think it may seem louder inside the car than out. I took the advise of Trev. and Larry B and have just accepted the noise, after all it's only at idle. I hope you like the boost as much as the rest of us. John
