Davis Acura of Langhorne - pricing concerns. $2500 for snap ring repair.

Just got a call from Craig at Davis Acura. On the phone he told me there is a 5% chance I need a new case. I'm sure Bernie will confirm this as well because he is working on the car. How should I tell them that I need a new case - they don't think I'm right.

NEXT ISSUE
Originally he told me 1500 for new case and labor + 300 if i want to do the clutch which is to much but i'm like ok sure.

I tow the car in and Bernie checks it out. The rep calls me and tells me its going to be 2163 total labor w/NEW CASE

if i get the clutch from them its going to be like 3600 total.

Anybody want to help me out. Should i tell them to work with me on the price. I called another dealer and they want 2500 total. But my concern is I want Bernie to work on the car.

First of all, I find the name of your topic extremely misleading:

They are quoting you $3500 for a snap ring repair and a clutch replacement, including the clutch. The topic title implies that it is only for the snap ring repair.

As for your question:

So their estimate went up, from $1800 to $2163, so it went up by $363. Did you ask them why? It's a legitimate question, one they should be able to answer.

You can politely ask if there's anything they can do for you, and you have nothing to lose by doing so. However, you can't "tell them" to do so.

I would want Bernie to work on the car, too, rather than a tech who does one snap ring repair or two clutches a year.

Also, $2500 sounds extremely low for a clutch replacement and a snap ring repair - so low that it sounds like there may have been a misunderstanding on what's included in the estimate.

ok i fixed the title to the post. sorry for being misleading.
So their estimate went up, from $1800 to $2163, so it went up by $363

Well I'll personally swing by and talk to them tomorrow. Relative to what others had paid to get this service done. Snap ring + clutch I think 3500-3600 + tax ect is really to much.

If he told me it would be equal to or less then 3000 I would of gave it a go. Has anyone on this board actually did the snap ring + clutch at Davis Acura??? whats the labor charge?

I think it's very reasonable. Sure, there are a couple of independent shops in the Western United States with the appropriate expertise and whose rates are lower. However, aside from those exceptions, I think this is a very typical and fair price. And when you take Bernie's expertise into consideration, it's a bargain.

don't quote me, but as a reference, as I am looking into getting my snap ring repaired...,

this is the numbers I am looking at:

upper casing parts ~$500
8-9 hours labor for snap ring repair ~600
OEM clutch ~1500 (lower with NSXCA discount)

Ofcourse, the above does not include the potential things that the transmission may need, synchros, seals..etc, that can't be deteremined til it's opend..., :(

I think he has purchased the clutch parts already and just is getting a quote on the labor only. Is this right?

question and advice for SilverOne.......

OEM Clutch is 1050 from Ray Lacks Honda - ask for TIM P. : he also wants 650 for the snap ring kit (upper case). (everything free shipping!) where did you find uppercase for 500?

is your labor 8-9 hours include labor for clutch.
thanks.

(((((jlindy) 1363 is the quote from davis acura for labor alone. if i get the case from them its 800 and if i get the oem clutch its near 1400.))))

The labor i got quoted is for snap ring repair, but was told clutch doesn't add too much more (maybe few more hours) on since the tranny is already opened. I will verify once I am ready to do the repair, as I am still researching if I want to do additional mods at this moment.

thanks for the info. Hope it works out for you.

As noted before verbal estimate b4 towing in car is 1800 for snap ring repair w/clutch labor & upper trans case.

Well he took out a written estimate with a total of 1663 w/o the case. Meaning 1663 was the labor charge only!!! Add 800 for the case and thats 2463 which was even more than what he told me on the phone 2136 - and more than what was told before I towed in the car 1800. WHAT A RIP OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How did the estimate go from
1800 to
2126 to
2426 ??????????

I was so angry with their service ethics & explain to him nicely why I was told 1800 and now 2426??? he told me he never said 1800 which was a total lie. I agrued with him and he said ok, ignor that extra 300 (2426-2126). And I said thats still more than what you originally said - after 10 minutes of agrueing he agreed to met me half way (2126-1800) and I said no. Its not fair you told me 1800 BEFORE I TOWED the car now you want more? There was no reason for it - he just told me he never said 1800.

I was so angry I was about to tear up - i just walked out on him and went to the waiting area. 5-10 minutes later he came down and said ok I can do 1800. In the end I will probaly be satisified but today I got really heated... no explaination why estimate went up from 1800 to 2126 to 2426.

Not only that - I had to again remind him I want a new case. He said why did i want one when I don't need one. They updated the ring bla bla bla - I said no I want a new case ; hope they don't screw anything up.

I really DO NOT like the service REP @ Davis Acura.

On the phone this morning I asked him if they started to work on the car yet... he said yes.

BUT IT WAS A TOTAL LIE!!! I swing by and the car is sitting in the same damn parking spot.

Anybody on this board have any problems with them??? Maybe he doesn't like me because I'm young or asian. I dunno - he lied to me twice.

Were you aware of this car being in the snap ring range when you purchased it? And if you did, why in the world did you buy it assuming you knew how much it cost to fix it expecially based on your tight income? I'm not trying to slam you or anything, but I would have thought that if you knew it was in the range that when you purchased it you would have sufficient funds set aside for such a repair so that you don't have to argue so many times with the people who have your car in their hands for repair. Since you realize that Bernie is the only one you want touching your car I would have thought you would want to keep your mouth shut until this whole thing was done. Then and only then start bitching about how much it cost and try to get your concessions.

Hindsite is 20/20, but before purchasing this car, did you make sure that there was a mechanic near you that you trusted with the repairs on it? This is just too frustrating to watch someone go through, I wish someone would have warned you about the costs of this car prior to purchase.

...the snap ring rears its ugly head....someday they will all be fixed and half the posts on Prime will be eliminated. :D

Yes I was aware that the car was in range and was ready to do the repair. It has an original clutch at 80+k either way I knew it had to be done sooner or later.

You don't understand my point of view - how would you feel if you walked in to Davis Acura for the 1st time to ask how much the repair would be and they said 1800. Then when you get the car towed in they tell you oh its 2136 for the same repair on the phone. Already curious to why this happen... I personally drove to the dealer and what do you know what I get there. Actually its going to be 2436.

And then when I called today to see if the car was worked on yet... HE SAID YES. So I acted quicky and ordered got an OEM clutch from TIM @ ray lacks. (HE IS REAL NICE). I paid an extra $150 for overnight express shipping because I thought the car was being worked on already. What do you know.... I drove by - the car is still outside in the same parking spot. I didn't say a word - i don't want to get on anyones bad side. because he lied it cost me $150

I would of loved to keep my mouth shut but I feel violated... its not even the money issue. The issue here is unethical. To tell you honestly I almost cried at the dealer... thats how much I was pushed around.

Hope it works out

Lets all hope it works out for you and your car is back on the road soon so you can put more miles of fun on it! I'm sure everyone can understand your frustration. I've had repair shops (including dealers) try to change prices on me too, so I know how you feel. Most good dealers will try to do the right thing and this dealer looks like they are trying to the right thing after all of the miscommunication. It could be that they are waiting on parts or Bernie's availability to start work on your car. Best of luck with the repair.

I live 2 hours from Davis and will have work done there this spring. I spoke to a gentleman named Steve there a couple of months back and he was super nice. Due to my driving distance, I'll get them to fax me an estimate before I go. That way we'll both be sure what the agreement is.

Moral: get this stuff in writing.

A bad case is what causes the ring to fail, correct?

Yes, the upper transmission case.

The write-up in the FAQ (under Troubleshooting - Transmission) is particularly good...

I don't want to say the name of my rep but it was not steve... i wish it was.

At this point I just want to get my car done - I do not think I am even concerned with the price anymore.

I miss my car so much - its going to feel like I just purchased the car all over again :-) when its done!

I had my aftermarket clutch, timing belt, valve adjustment and oil changed to mobile 1 there and found then to be much cheaper then the dealers in my area. They also gave me a loaner car and i got to test drive Mr Davis personal CL 6-speed with comptech SC. Ive always had my work done there on my nsx and the first time when i got a quote from them i asked them several times if this was the right price before driving from NY to PA to have it worked on. You may not be happy with the service reps there but i can assure you Bernie is one of the best.....feel free to go in and talk to him as i have in the past i usally watch as he works on my car while its there. If you get bored im sure you already know they serve starbucks coffee there and have an internet cafe so you can surf prime while they are working on your baby.
