Denon's $499 Ethernet cable

Many pro audio devices (amplifiers, etc.) are now using the ethernet interface to transmit signal data, clearly this is the aim of this product, not your home cable modem.

Yes, that is the aim of the product, but to what end? It's a digital signal -- digital is digital, and doesn't degrade like analog, especially over a distance of 1.5 meters (the advertised cable).

If I put 10011001 into the cable and get 10011001 out, does it matter if it was sent over a $500 audiophile cable, or a $5 cable I got at Radio Shack?

But one may say: the expensive cable is less likely to drop or flip a bit, and therefore more faithfully transmits the digital signal. And I would say: what is more important, a music stream dropping a bit, or a financial stream, such as a bank or brokerage would require? All but the most deranged audiophile would say the latter, and yet what sort of ethernet cables do they use? I've been in more than one bank wiring closet, and I've never seen a $500 cable in there  .

A buddy of mine locally had a set of $2k speaker wires. I hooked them up to my system and I could not hear a bit of difference. I think the best money you can spend on a system is on a power conditioner. That IMO is the best return on your investment.
