I just need to vent:

If you feel so inclined, tell me what you think.

I was looking for a another car for my teenagers. Found a 1991 Honda CRX VIN JHMED835XLS000627 in Rancho Cucamonga CA. The guy says he is the original owner and has the title in hand....nothing wrong with the car, could easily make the trip from Cal to AZ and he wants $2500. Fair enough. I don't try to talk him down I just give him a $100 Paypal deposit to hold it for two days until my wife and I drive out on the next Saturday to pick it up. We live in Tucson so it's about 400 miles one way.

So Friday night I call to make sure everything is still OK before we drive all the way out there and to get directions to his house. He tells me is to bring cash and he doesn't want to do the transaction at his house. He'll meet us somewhere. OK....no big deal. I can respect that.

So after a nice drive in the Red NSX, we get to the Embassy Suites in Palm Desert and I decide to call him to let him know we're ready to pick up the car.

Conversation goes like this:

Him- "There's a problem. I don't have the title."

Me - "You said you had the title."

Him - "I thought the pink slip was the title."

Me - "Where is the title?"

Him - "I sent the title to AAA to transfer it from my father-in-law to me and it's not back yet."

Me - "I thought you were the original owner. How about we just do a bill of sale and you send me the title when you get it."

Him - "I don't feel comfortable doing just a bill of sale because of liability reasons. You'll just have to come back when the title is here. AAA said it will take 6-8 weeks. I sent you an e-mail this morning and refunded your deposit."

(I had already been on the road for three hours by the time he had sent the e-mail)

Me - "I just drove over 400 miles to pick up this car.....can I a least look at it while I'm here. Why did you refund my deposit if I'm still getting the car?"

Him - "I'm sorry. You'll have to come back. I didn't want to hang on to your money that long."

I tried several times to convince him to do the bill of sale and to let me have the car but he wouldn't budge. I thought too bad he wouldn't give me his address before I left or I'd drive straight over so we could take care of this in person. So my wife and I decide to make the best of it......we go eat at Ruth's Chris (if you've never been....go!) and go see a show afterwards yada...yada..and drive home to Tucson the next day. With no CRX:mad:

So a few weeks later I e-mail him to ask when I can pick up the car. He ignores the first few e-mails and then finally sends me a one liner:

Him - "I am sorry, the car is no longer for sale."

Me - "Would it be too much to ask for an explanation since I already gave you a deposit and drove over 400 miles once already???"

Him - "Car won't pass emissions. Estimate to fix is $800 and car is only worth $2500. Can't afford to fix it so car is being donated to charity."

Me- "California doesn't require an emissions test to transfer a vehicle out of state. I'll still give the $2500 and take the car off your hands and you won't have to worry about anything."

Him- "I am sorry....car is going to charity."

So now I'm kinda getting tired of being lied to so I e-mail him one last time (and kept it professional) but basically said, "I hope whatever extra money someone offered you for the car was worth you sacrificing your integrity and honor."

In his final act of defiance he e-mails me back and says that I remind him of a four year old that doesn't get what he wants and If I don't behave he's gonna put me in time out.

I hope for his sake I never run into him in person........should have got his address before I went out there.

people are morons, tell me you didnt drive that far to meet somebody off craigslist??!

for 2500 a clean 1992-1995 civic dx coupe/dx-vx-cx hatch can be gotten, easier to work on, easier to find replacement parts etc, or an ex model coupe or any model 4dr

Nope...found it on Autotrader. Yeah, you're right. My boys and I just got done restoring our 95 CX Hatch and thought a CRX would be fun. We just found the cleanest 99 Integra I've ever seen last week so it's all good.

I find the cheaper the car the more morons come out of the woodwork. To this DAY the best car I ever owned was a 1987 Ford Escort Pony with a 4 spd manual. I sold it with 190k on it. Ran great and needed nothing. I was asking $600 firm and had people literally (not joking) lining up at my apartment to buy it. People calling me night and day. It was crazy. I held firm to "first come with money, first served" and when the lady showed up with her two brothers, mother, and 2 kids, the brothers took it for a 20 min test drive and then came back. She says "I only have $500, is that enough". I lost it. I told her there was an ATM down the street. Finally she did get the money. Just such a pain to sell a used car.

That sucks man but it is more common than you might think. I use to own a staffing agency and i can't tell you how many times i had people come in and fill out applications BEGGING me for jobs and sharing all kinds of sob stories with me to only have them turn around a few days later to tell me that they are "above" doing certain work.

I actually placed one guy on an assignment (against my better judgment) because he told me he and his kids were about to be put on the street and he ended up stealing thousands of dollars worth of tools from the place i sent him to.

People say that i'm too harsh or cynical but i i'd like to believe that i am just more seasoned than they are.

LOL I love these stories.

I had something similar happen to me. Bought a plane ticket to see the car and he ends up sellling it to his co worker for more $$. Just remember karma is a bi*ch. BTW, I do have a very close friend who may be selling their silver integra...non smokers, think it has 160k miles. Don't think it's been in any accidents, if so minor. I can ask if u are interested. It's located here in Corona, CA. It is his wife's car and believe she is the original owner...don't know the year off hand.

Send me his information and I'll mess with him. He's only fifty minutes away from me.

At THAT moment it was the right time to stop waisting time on him.

It didn't really ring any warning bells with me because I never let buyers come to my house either. I always meet them somewhere because I don't want them to see my toys and come back for them later. And I have heard of a wave of counterfeit cashiers checks also.......

Simply said, no, there are a lot of people like that around these days.

I have had similar things (people not living up to a made sale agreement) happen a few times over the last months both as buyer and also as seller.

As seller I have had people telling me they really want to buy a part, but will need a few days/weeks to arrange the cash, can I please reserve it, is a done sale (no expensive things only 300 U$ or so max).
So I agree and after not hearing anything for several weeks, remind them on the sale, I am waiting...
Reaction: sorry, cannot live up to the deal, bad timing etc.
The fact that I already put other interested parties off as item I thought was sold doesn't bother them at all, "what is the fuss, just sell to someone else".

Even had it happen as buyer here on Prime when I offered asking price on a part.
The guy agreed this to be OK, just needed to check out shipping and would let me know total to be paid.
After not getting any mails for several days, I sent a reminder of the agreed sale, please let me know total price.
Got reply that the part was sold and we didn't have a deal as I hadn't made a downpayment (which he never asked when agreeing on the sale).
When I reminded him on integrity, agreed sale etc, I got likewise responce as you: don't act like a spoilt child not getting what you want etc etc.

Worst thing is that even some other people who I told about this seemed to agree this was acceptable as I didn't make a downpayment, so no done sale.
A mutually agreed sale doesn't seem to mean anything to people anymore.

So sadly yes, lots of people don't have integrity anymore when money comes into the picture.
