Well, times are bad now and i'm sorry to say i can't afford a reputable shop to do my work. So, I have the tools, book, knowledge and the help of prime for help. I know everything will come out perfect! here are a few shot of the work. You can see that the head gasket was being eaten up from all direction like cancer.

Wow, so are you replacing the head gasket or doing some upgrades in preparation for something bigger?

So how long did it take you to drop the motor out? It looks like there is only 5 bolts on each side holding that cradle up. I've got about 40k on my FI/built motor setup and the clutch just started slipping. Thinking about just dropping the motor while I'm at it and refreshing it before I wreck something instead of just pulling the tranny. I want to shoot for 500hp soon and it would be nice to having the confidence of a refreshed motor.

Just throw some that sand in her, that should fill up the leaks!
Trev
p.s. That quite the job you undertook!

looking good warren!!! a DIY guy after my own heart!!

FWIW i dropped my motor the same way...took about 3-4 hours, but that included getting it 36 inches off the ground on jack stands....not easy or fun...

It wasn't to bad. I started at 1pm and dropped it around 5:30pm. I'm doing my clutch too. It started slipping as soon as i boosted. The only thing i'm thinking is going to be tough is the install!

thanks. I have a weird incline and decline in my driveway, so i think i had to raise it almost 4 feet.

Did you raise the back of the car with a hoist? Is it 3ft from the rear jack points that you need to clear to slip the motor out? Did you make any sort of dolly or just slide it on the ground? Thanks for the pics, keep up the good work.

u used a standard 2 ton jack and jack stands where probably about 2 ft or 2.5 ft. If you raise it high enough you can actually roll it out with the wheels itself. I used a furniture cart, maybe about 4 inches off the ground.

You didn't happen to check to make sure your deck and heads are true did you? Considering you blew a headgasket(any overheating as well?), I'd at least check to make sure everything is good. MLS head gaskets are not as forgiving to slightly uneven surfaces as regular/OEM gaskets. I would hate for you to go through all this work only to have a blown/leaky gasket once some heat gets into it.

i had the heads resurfaced along with the block lightly resurfaced (more for a clean) about 1.5 yrs ago. My engine never over heated once. I did use the straight stick to measure the heads and block with tabs. Everything is perfect, thank god!

Sounds good, just looking out.

Whats all the grime on top of the cylinder? Will that be cleaned before it goes back in?

That is not grime dude.
That is beat in carbon that he could not simply remove without stripping out his pistons.
Just my thoughts.

Ya, like I said.... lol
Don't think he wants to rip apart his engine right now.
Little carb out once running will shine things up, along with two scoops of sand.

hehe, why not? Its already out...its only about an hours worth of work to disassemble what he's got, but that's just me

I am bringing you my transmission then. Should be about 15 minutes to do an overhaul for me,,,,lol

Sometimes, I just post to hear my own voice.

You don't want to pull the pistons unless you are going to re-ring and hone. You can remove the carbon by hand with scrapers and wire brushes. While it doesn't sound good, it's done all the time on mere mortal engines. That would be a tough call on an NSX engine. I wouldn't count on carb products to work.

Bring it down :P Super easy to do really.. probably take an 1-1.5hrs max to replace the syncro sets and sleeves + bearings.

Hardest part is pulling the gears off the shafts (sometimes), and lining up the reverse switch lever when you put the outer gearbox case on

I was surprised at how simple these transmissions are. However, yes, the hardest part to me is lining up the reverse lever/gear assembly so the housing clunks on smoothly. Two reverse syncro springs later....

Ya, they are almost identical internally to D/B series minus the oil pump gear.

the pistons are spotless... everything came out with brake cleaner. everything! One thing i have to say is, I HATE DOING THE VALVE ADJUSTMENTS! That was horrible. I would say that's the most time consuming job of all. I'm just glad is all over with. Getting the hang of the tools and not tightening to hard is tough. I honestly will never do that again. I'll pay someone else for the adjustment. Even when the motor is out it's a pain. well, it's all together now. Tomorrow i'll install the motor and fire it up. I'm to tired to post pictures of today's work. i'll take a long nap and post them up later. DAMN i'm tired.

Nice, I bet your tired!
Change out that oil right away after a bit of idling and then again soon after you drive it for a bit, Just my thoughts, cheap peace of mind.
Enjoy
